What has anyone heard about the proposed Apple netbook?
Is it just a screen?
Keyboard too?
What OS?
Anything?
This is supposed to be out in Q3 right?
-
Everything about an "Apple netbook" is pure rumor right now - no one will know for certain until Apple announces it, or legitimate information + pictures leak out (which is a rare occurence: I only remember seeing leaked pictures for the Apple unibody laptops and the iPod Nano "fatty").
-
Not gonna happen. Apple is a "premium" brand, and netbooks are supposed to be cheap.
-
Does not mean it can't be like a Sony P. Maybe I should change that. "What has anyone heard about the proposed Apple small touch screen computer?"
Why else are they ordering a lot of 10 inch touch screens? To make a large Iphone display for their stores I'm sure. -
I'm pretty sure the OS will be Windows 7
-
The 'rumors' gathered for now show it could be a 9-10" tablet.
-
If the distinguishing factor between a normal laptop, and netbook is that very few netbooks have a CD drive, then isn't Macbook air already a premium netbook?
If they make an Apple netbook, wouldn't just be a smaller Air with a touch screen? -
I'm hoping it's a 10 inch touch screen, no dvd drive, atleast 5 hours battery, thin enough to get good battery life, keyboard. But in a sub $800 price point. $600-$700. This would sell for Apple because many people don't get Macs because they don't run a lot of the programs windows does. I'm one of thoses people, but since netbooks are so slow in the first place then it won't matter because I could not run thoses programs anyway. Also if OSX was on an Atom cpu then I'm sure it would run faster then windows too.
-
Don't expect a mechanical keyboard.
-
Yeah, I can only wish. I won't be that bad to not have a physical keyboard because apple knows how to get around that stuff.
-
Currently a Apple netbook is about as likely as the mythical midi-mac.
So don't hold your breath.
Best focus on what is actually a product... otherwise you'll be forever waiting and disappointed.

I can wait because I don't have to money right now and I want a lot of other things before I get that.

Also, atoms based netbook not as week as you think. Adobe photoshop, premiere pro, after effects, maya, vmware, autocad runs smooth as butter on current netbooks with hdds. These windows based netbooks can even play 1080P BD-rip with a little optimization. -
Are you sure about the 1080P. I've read even the Asus N10 with a Nvidia 8300m in it could barely do 720P. An apple has their OS optimized for their hardware. Why do you think they have such good performance even on a mac mini. My mom has a 6+ year old 500mhz mac 1.5GB with tiger on it that is running faster then my dad's 2.8Ghz PD with 2 gb ram computer with XP.
And snow leopard would most likely be on it so it would be optimized for the Atom CPU. -

I play 720P and 1080P h.264 BD-rips from the internet flawlessly on my acer aspire one with 160GB hdd and underclocked intel gma 950. I've also done a little optimization and used special codecs to decode the 1080P video.
The 1080P videos i'm talking about are Blueray rips, not blueray disk. Those blueray disks needs a lot of processing power to decode and their bitrate is way beyond 20Mbit/s which the netbooks aren't capable to handle.
Of course, every operating system shines when it's optimized with the hardware. E.g. My acer aspire one with optimized windows xp for the hardware runs just as well and as responsive as a quadcore mac pro with 8gig of ram running macOSX. Performance is sometimes determined a lot by its optimization for specific hardware. Since windows is optimized for pretty much any computer thus, some if not a lot of its performance loss is due to the compatibilityness. If windows was preoptimized for specific computer, then it should perform just as well if not better than OSX assuming you have the same hardware. Windows is just much easier to further optimize the OS than OSX thus able to achieve better optimization.
The macs are awesome for people who don't know how to optimize their OS. Macs comes pre-optimized and that's a good thing. I wish windows xp on my acer aspire one is pre-optimized so I don't have to waste a couple minutes of my life. -
That's true, but there is one thing you have to do on a windows computer that you don't on a Mac which is maintaining it. Windows no matter how much people say Vista has gotten rid of has windows rot. Macs don't not have this problem.
-
jackluo923 Notebook Virtuoso
True. That's where 3rd party software comes in play. You use them to automatically maintain the computer for you so it always stays in perfect condition.
-
-
But having all these extra programs running takes up needed resources and if you don't have your computer on all the time then they can't run. Also you don't have to worry about viruses on a Mac.
-
-
-
I don't think I personally will need protection from that because I had a Mac for at least 3 years and never had one problem with it. Web browsed everyday and never got one virus, malware, spyware or any other thing that can harm your computer.
-
jackluo923 Notebook Virtuoso
The programs which I was referring to doesn't take any needed resources. It only run with your idle resources which isn't used by anything thus it doesn't affect the performance.
Also, what makes you think I have to worry about viruses on a Windows based PC? I don't have antivirus on my laptop and I don't get viruses. Personally, i don't need antivirus on my laptop since I haven't a single virus since the day I bought this laptop. There are viruses for Mac as well, so it's not 100% safe. If you want a truely viruses free OS, go create your own linux OS and write your own drivers..etc. There are a lot of loopholes and backdoors in both Windows and Mac OS. It's just a matter of whether people want to take advantage of it or not.
Virus isn't something most tech savy windows user would worry about. The only people who are "worried" about viruses are newbie or overloaded IT guy whose job is to ensure everything is running smoothly. -
I'm pretty sure the "Apple" netbook can be found over at mydellmini dot com.
-
I'm by no means a Apple fan boy, but I will pull for any Company that can make a good product or service. For instance Since windows is the only true computer gaming platform then most are to have a windows computer that they game on. That's why I have one also that they can run many freeware apps that Macs can't plus they are a lot cheaper for the performance that you can get that is if you build it your self. For general everyday computing a Mac would be all I would need. Out of the 5+ Mac users I know they have not had any problem with their computers as long as they have had them. And none of them have virus protection and have not got a virus.
"but it's true for some people with special needs." Well that's them. There are not that many people who have those "special needs".
The true dangerous virus I have heard of for a Mac was that Trojan a while back that you could get from torrenting. Personally I believe if you are illegally downloading any thing that you deserve to get a virus.
"I don't have antivirus on my laptop and I don't get viruses." I don't know what websites your going to, but I'm sure not many. My cousin had his computer and the virus protection ran out (Mcafee from Dell) in April and his mom did not renew it. I came to his house in June. His computer was so screwed up I could not believe he could even use it. He had well over 500 viruses on it with the old virus database still there.
"Virus isn't something most tech savy windows user would worry about." Yes this is true, but the majority of people out there don't have a clue how to install let alone run the programs needed to maintain a windows computer.
This is why a Mac would be a better choice for the none experienced computer user. Unlike a PC most of the time Macs just work.
Thank you for having good counter points about this discussion, most of my friends that I get in arguments like this just have stupid responses like "windows is just better" even though they have never tried a Mac and know barely anything about computers. -
apple needs a netbook there products are overpriced something about 400-500.00 range possible if apple made a netbook it could be smaller than sonys vaio p series i only use apple for ipods

just like dlhuss said
apple all ready has a netbook, it just happens to be made by someone else. -
I think less than 11'' is just too small :S But it would be nice to have one, it doesn't actually need to be so cheap but being in the price range of mac mini would be awesome.
Check at 11'' Sony laptops, they are all but cheap -
Right look at the Sony P. That's 8 inches and they made it work.
-
I, for one, would buy an Apple netbook. OS X is great for netbooks and it would be more affordable and have more value than the Macbooks.
-
I doubt that supposed netbook will be cheap. It will not be affordable for many people if this is the case.
-
True though, nothing from Apple is "cheap."
But, it will be their cheapest model. That's enough to get my attention. -
I think it will be something like sony p...
-
Once again, I really, really wouldn't go expecting a hardware keyboard. A non-detachable one, anyway.

With the iPhone and iPod touch, I wouldn't be surprised with a touch-screen netbook either! It sounds like something Apple would do, and it would be great because of the tactile response of the screen when typing, like the iPhone and touch.
It might have a tapered edge, like the MBA, or it could very well be a huge iPod touch. We won't know until the actual product comes out.
-
you mean detachable if you pull the laptop apart? well sure.. all laptops have detachable screens as well.. and speakers.. and even detachable surface mount capacitors.. all you need is a soldering iron! -
i bet apple will turn out a small laptop, smaller than the current macbooks, but i bet they wont label it a netbook and they will put it out with lower core 2 duo or some other dual core cpus,
you think they would sell an apple computer as cheap as a netbook, dont think so. they will make it a powerful machine and make it small like a netbook.wonder if it will happen. -
Here's the latest rumors about an Apple Netbook.
This link has a picture of it.

If true, I'm so gonna get one & hopefully I won't be stuck in a contract.

Would you think if this does happen that Verizon will force Apple to have data plan for their netbooks. Or do you think Apple would not let them? -
So if the rumors were to be true, chances are you'll have to cough up $30 a month, at the very least. -
Would you think Apple would allow a forced data plan on their netbook? Not as many people want to get a data plan.
-
1. An amazing mobile device that gets you internet everywhere.
Result: Data plan required.
2. A small computer that has VZW access capabilities.
Result: Probably data optional.
Given that netbooks are supposed to allow surfing everywhere, that VZW tracks and forces data usage by ESN and MEID, and that if it were choice #2 it'd be a lot smarter to allow both CDMA and GSM networks (instead of just VZW) for data access like most other similar devices, I'm guessing it's the former. Besides, Apple forces data on it's iPhone users.
But that's only if this rumored netbook is that rumored media pad. Which, by your post, you seem to be implying.
Of course, everything is based on half baked rumors. -
it is a good idea to have something smaller than macbook anyways, but they are still struggling with the idea of making it less expensive(or really expensive) since the pricing strategy of apple is different from other companies, sony has its customers based in japan who have no issue with spending 2k+(or the companies) for ultraportables, US is different.
-
Yeah all of these are rumors right now, but I hope most are true. I would love to have a 10 inch media device loaded with OSX. (full version) I don't want to have a data plan for it since things I would be doing with it would suck up bandwidth and I would run out too fast. Plus I'm just a kid that does not have another $60 per month for data otherwise I would have it on my smartphone.
Also if I were to get a data plan for my phone would I be able to use it with that netbook as long as it has a broadband card in it?
What has anyone heard about the proposed Apple netbook?
