How do i clean things up after all this? i have 3ghz, maybe i have to upgrade to 4gb now.

I think you just need more RAM. But it cheap from www.newegg.com or www.outpost.com. Macs do not really need to be defraged but I think you will get better advice from someone who actually owns a mac.

part of the slow down is prolly spotlight indexing all the files you put on. OS X has built in defrag that runs basically whenever the computer is idle. The first simple thing you could try is a restart. then go from there.

max out to 4gb huh...heheheh looking to get another 2gb so i can replace my current cheap $21 1gb ram. because im using different brand of ram.

What Radcom said. If you recently transferred a large volume of files over to OSx, the reason for the slowdown is probably spotlight indexing. If the lag persists for a while and is still very noticeable I would probably take it into an Apple store. There really is no reason that having so few programs open would result in a significant decline in performance.

Disk Warrior is a defrag program, but in most cases you don't need it. Every time you install software on the Mac that says it's optimising at the end is defragging the drive.
Disk Warrior is also not free, but when you've got a real problem with data, using it together with Data Rescue might be your best option.
Edit; And get more RAM. You'll like it alot more with the extra. And lucky you, you can get 4GB for $80... my MacPro uses the pricey sticks at $225 for 4GB. -
i get employee discount hehehe a $200 reatail 2gb stick is only $70
that's how they make so much money, hehehe like monsters cable for $140 i only get it for $30!

There's also idefrag

If you have 3gb of RAM, you will not see much a performance boost to 4gb. Your issues are not ram related. If its not fixed after indexing, you may have an other issue.

Why are you guys all recommending the OP to buy more RAM? As RogueMonk said, I believe the issue isn't RAM related. It's unusual for Leopard to slow down like that when you have more than enough RAM. Most users wouldn't need 4gb unless they're using VmWare Fusion or Parallels.
