I recently purchased an Air and have been continualy impressed by the quality of its display. Having previously owned a Vizio with an IPS display I can honestly say there are little noticeable differences aside from perhaps slightly narrower viewing angles.

I believe that the retina models were the first to start using IPS technology in their displays but what makes the earlier MacBook displays so good? Just high end TN panel? or something else?

I believe the displays are higher end TN panels but also being Apple they can have their displays calibrated correctly out of the box, since they control hardware and the software side of things.

Most windows users have to calibrate their displays with a Spyder or find a calibrated icc profile for their particular panel to get the most from it.
