Since there's a topic for Macbooks, and one for the Air, I thought it was only natural for me to create a Macbook Pro thread![]()
So what would you like to see on the new Macbook Pro?
We don't know if it's going to be Montevina or not, but I'd sure like DDR 3 ram on it, a new keyboard, bigger resolution for the 15", at least one more USB port and a 256bit GPU. 9700m GTS? As far as I know the 9700m GT is still 128bit. Also, the 3850 and 3870 from ATi are 256bit as well.
Oh and please, don't be shy of making it 1.1" thick or even 1.2" if you can't fit a decent GPU inside![]()
How about you guys?

How about a carbon fibre chassis. I'd love that.

An SSD option would be nice, those are getting cheaper every month that it now is somewhat feasible to put them in to high end laptops like the MBP. Actually, it would be cool if the upcoming MBP refresh would allow people to change out the hard-drive without voiding the warranty.
Also, it would be cool to offer color options other than white and black for the Mac Books, and only aluminum for the MBP. Having, say, 3 colors to choose from at launch would be nice. Piano black, metallic gray, and alpine white would make for excellent starters.
Thirdly, I'd like to see a mobile-quad-core processor but I don't think Intel or AMD have those available yet. Then again, if a person did need such computing power then a desktop solution would be a better approach. -
more USB ports, i just can't handle having only 2, montevina, at least a 9600m gt though 256bit cards are enticing, they will kill battery life, sd card reader, new color options, larger HDD, having just 250gb isn't enough and i afraid of opening up my laptop for anything more than ram upgrades, the 3850 and stuff would only workin the 17 inch version. i will live with a 9600m gt in mine and all LED screens. SSD isn't worth it yet. ill buy ssd whne i can get atleast 300gb without paying an outrageous amounts of money.

My greatest want in the MBP is for it not to get any thinner. Frankly, I think 1" is thin enough and any more will lead to too many thermal constraints and component restrictions.
Other than that, pretty much what everyone else said. DDR3 1066 is probably a given to set the MBP apart from the DDR2 800 that is common in Windows Montevina laptops. At least a 9600M GT or HD 3670, but hopefully a 9700M GTS. LED screens across the board. Larger HDDs, with SSD option. Blu-ray readers with DVD-burning functionality standard and a Blu-ray writer option. Better speakers, maybe with a return of the Harmon Kardon partnership. There are a lot of integrated sound chips that have Dolby certification so I can't see why Apple doesn't use one. Given the MBP is used by sound and video editing people, they may as well get the thing Dolby certified. More USB ports isn't really a big priority for me although it wouldn't hurt, but realistically they couldn't really fit anymore in the current 15.4" design. They'll probably move to DisplayPort to avoid the HDMI licensing fees and as a favour to Intel. ASUS has a hybrid ESATA/USB port on some of their laptops so I don't see why Apple couldn't use one of those to add ESATA without sacrificing other ports. Although I support Firewire 800 is the Apple preferred method. And I actually quite like the current MBP keyboard.
One thing I wonder about is whether Apple will move to a 16:9 form factor instead of 16:10. Seeing how infrequently Apple does a complete redesign and if the next refresh is a redesign, this is their only chance for the next few years. Personally, I'm fine with the 16:10 form factor. Going to 16:9 may be better for some movies, but I find that their are quite a few movies that are even wider now so satisfying Hollywood by chasing their aspect ratios seems a waste of time for me. -
I'd like a redesign that incorporated MacBook Air styling, adopting the MacBook Air keyboard with white backlit keys, option for a higher screen resolution and one more USB port (3 is good, 4 even better but not necessary). I'd like to see a new graphics card in the MacBook Pro, either the ATI Radeon 4000 series as they arrive or NVIDIA 9000 series, but with the recent NVIDIA issues and the glowing reports of the ATI 4000 Desktop series, I'd prefer to go ATI for this round.
I'd like to see the option of a black anodized aluminum version of the MacBook Pro as well. I think that would look awesome! -
More USB ports, card reader. Ability for remote to fit in express card slot like in the Dell XPS line. 1680 x 1050 resolution on the 15" screen at the VERY LEAST. Swappable hard drive and carbon fibre chassis.
Edit: Ohh yeah and almost forgot: BLU-RAY BURNER! -
dual quad cores, triple sli GT280, titanium chassis, 20 mega pixels camera, 2TB HDD, 3D display, temperature stay at 40 or below under heavy load.
-
HDMI, eSATA, internal card reader, dual HD's, SSD option, 9800GTX SLI, BluRay, numpad
-
HDMI, card reader, and bluray would be nice. But numpad, they will not do, sli i doubt it. Same with eSATA. Dual hdd's are a slim chance. And none of the things that nirvana stated will be in it. The quality of a 20megapixel camera on such a small sensor would be horrible.
-
Besides the obvious stuff like more speed, more memory more other stuff - I just want the chassis to be much tougher and more resistant to scratches and bending. Also a GPU that won't melt when pushed hard.
-
Oh yeah, forgot to mention the Blu-Ray drive!
-
6+ hour battery life (AVERAGE).
-
Lethal Lottery Notebook Betrayer
a black color option
keyboard that does not look purple when lit
higher res options
a gaming grade gpu (no the 8600 does not cut it)
slight cpu bump
800 mhz ram
3 usb ports
mem card reader -
CheaperPRICE DAMMIT
-
how could nobody mention a cooler running notebook?
-
Because a cool running notebook doesn't exist. but... a cool running NETbook (Asus E-PC) does.
-
Fix the goddam (NVIDIA) GPU PLEASE!.. Don't fit a GPU that has its own mind and mood.
BTW, the Eee PC wasn't exactly 'cool' at all.. it does get quite warm after some use. -
probably a better cooling system, at least a notebook that is much cooler then the current mbp.
-
My vote would be for SSD option and reasonably priced at that too. And maybe bring in a redesigned MBP in 13" version that's at least comparable in specs to the current 15".
-
Apple could lay off on the SSD unless they can somehow get a 150+GB one at a not exorbitant price. But for me what I'd really like to see is a much, MUCH longer battery life. I can squeeze about 4 hours out of my battery when I'm just internet surfing, but the minute I start playing music, or DVDs, the battery life instantly goes down to an hour to hour and a half. I'd like probably 6+ hours. I mean 2.2GHz is fast enough. -
More colour options (i.e. crimson red?
)
15" should have 1680x1050 as optional
Blu Ray, most defineately!
Other gfx option -- i don't really need the -600 series cards. I want the -400 series cards.either that or newer gen cards, now that they're out.
Needs more usb ports!Come on, Apple!
The MBP shouldn't be allowded to shocked people. (I get this a lot whilst typing -- a real pain in the neck) -
-
something in the 1200-1500 range that doesnt have a integrated graphics card or a low end graphics card. Why does apple force you to jump from 1k to 2k just for a graphics card that will cost 100 dollars to buy. I realize the MBP has more than just a better graphics card, but if you can give me the MB with something better then the integrated graphics card they would have had my money a long time ago, and i think a lot of other people are in the same boat as me.
-
Providing they can address the heat from that.
-
well they need either a new mid line of 15 inch notebooks, allow the MBP to have more of a range of performance to reduce its price, or add a 15 inch MB that you can actually go up in performance, and not just improve on whats already in the notebook (if you know what i mean, 2 gigs how about add 4, 2.2 ghz how about add 2.4).

If I'm not mistaken, the MacBook has a pretty big bezel around it's screen. I would definitely support moving the MacBook to a 14.1" form factor. Gaining room by using a thinner bezel, the overall size won't grow too much so it'll still be portable, but that bit of extra space could help address heat and allow Apple to add in a low-end GPU. Switching to aluminum may be able to keep the weight the same despite the increase in form factor. And to tie it back into the MBP topic, a MB with a low-end GPU would force Apple to add a bit more to the MBP to justify the difference.
Oh, an Wireless USB has been ratified I believe, so you'd think Apple would be a prime candidate to incorporate it. Although Apple might be supporting standardizing on WiFi for device to computer interaction since I believe the iPhone Remote operates over WiFi or is it Bluetooth? -
graphics, battery life, price, and cooling system
Honestly, i think they should keep the keyboard cause that wouldn't really distinguish the "pro" feel. Some thing has to be distinct, and in this case its the aluminum chassis and keyboard. However, less flex would be nice -
a 9700m gt for the refresh, same ol keyboard or another silver one will be nice. keep the aluminum chassis but make it more scratch resistant. i shouldn't have to buy a invisible shield for a aluminum case notebook. keep the price point around the same place as m apple is rly in the high end market as far as computers go. use the intel chipsets as many people would like centrino 2 more than some custom chipset that provides some sort of "advantage". i suspect that in real life, that "advantage" that apple talked about is rly minimal.

I want a 9800M GT in the new MBP. The MBP was my first choice, then the m17x, before I bought my desktop, and the 8600M GT was the only thing holding me back.
I agree, I really hope Apple keeps the aluminum keyboard. I can't say that I'm a fan of the MBA's tapered edges, I hope that the new MBP keeps the same shape. -
9700m GTS or 9800m GT would be just awesome. Any 256bit GPU would be great
-
1.good video card
2.hdmi
3.esata
4.hi-res display
5.cheapper base price -
-
^well,it is the bonus feature of MBP-you can boil eggs on it while playing Crysis
-
I don't care much about the whole cooling bit, I think it's just fine
But I like eggs -
- Another USB port or two.
- KEEP THE CURRENT KEYBOARD. I don't mind the Macbook/Apple keyboard approach really, but the Powerbook/MBP keyboard is still better.
- No card reader. Please. Those are so much better suited as external USB devices.
- 3G card slot wouldn't be a bad idea (it's certainly been done before). Under the battery or so. Before the iPhone 3G I didn't have much hope of this, but now that Americans seem to have been properly introduced to 3G maybe there is a chance.
- Option of higher resolution screen on the 15.4" version as well as the 17" version.
- The usual upgrades - cpu, hd, graphics card. No option for less than 256MB VRAM would be an added bonus. -
-
If I'd have to choose between another USB port and a card reader for my Macbook Pro, I'd choose the USB port. Have nothing against fitting one in the Macbooks though...
-
-
well, i just watched a vid of someone replacing a HDD on the MBP and i think they should make it easier. not so many screws to remove. and about the excuse of apple trying to make the bottom of the macbook pro as clean looking as possible, who the heck looks at that. its like saying who looks at your butt.
they should just make a door for it like the ram.
-
vs.
You're right, its not a deal breaker of any sort, but it doesn't hurt.
-
I'd like the macbook/ MBA style keyboard + the option for black. They can't include other colours as they want the business/professional style. A solid graphics card and a card reader.
-
either way, MBA keyboard, better LED screens(they aren't bad but it won't hurt for them to be even better.),more battery life, 9M gpu>9500m gs , better wifi connectivity for the macbook pro, express card media remote, express card/54, ds/micro sd card reader, more usb ports( a sad fact of the macbook line of laptops), optional BD reader( im fine with a dvd), don't make it thinner( 1 inch is thin enough as it is), lighter if possible, optional pizza maker(LOL like thats gonna happen)
well thats all that i can think of for now.
-
i dug up something nice on google. look at this: best prediction
-
Yeah I've been following those rumors on a couple of sites for months now
It will be really interesting to see what Apple come up with next -
-
thanks but it was on the 1st page on google and was the first result.
What would you like in the new Macbook Pro?
