    Hey guys!

I'm still debating wether I'd spill the money out on a SSD or just get a 7200rpm HDD.

And I'm leaning more and more towards the 7200rpm HDD.

So what 7200rpm HDDs do you guys have in your MBPs? What brands are the good ones?

    Cheers!

Hitachi 7K500 is the fastest traditional notebook hard drive. It's quiet too.

Seagate's Momentus XT combines a HDD with 4GB SSD read cache. It's faster than the Hitachi. But you might want to wait for more customer reviews because the first units seem to vibrating and noisy.

What is your budget and how much capacity do you require?

Maybe I'm missing something, but why don't you just get the 7200 RPM drive offered by Apple? It is absolutely silent and I've never noticed any vibration. Do you need something bigger?

Looking at his signature he probably already has the MBP and wants to do the upgrade himself.

Yes I already have the MBP. There's no question of budget (whatever it costs, I'll pay for it) and there's no question of storage (bigger the better obviously).

But I'm looking for a HDD that would be silent and would work best for my MBP.

In that case Hitachi 7K500 is your best bet.

Seagate will release the 750GB 7200.5 within 4 weeks. It might be better than the Hitachi.

If money is not an issue, how about an SSD instead?
Thats silent, and runs cooler, and will draw less power from the battery also.
Im looking to get a OCZ Vertex 2 240GB drive, but it goes up to almost 500GB I think.......

Generally yes, but it depends on the model. My HP DM1 lost 10-20 minutes battery life going from Seagate 5400.6 to Intel G2.

Another vote for the Hitachi 7k500. I have two in my macbook pro and they've been great. I've got one in my older dell now too and I bought another one yesterday from the local Fry's Electronics for about $70 to test a new OS without affecting my business lappy.

Thanks very much guys, looks like if I don't wanna spend $1238928379872 on an SSD, the Hitachi 7k500 will be my next purchase!

    Cheers! :)
