I'm not 100% sure but I think they are under the impression that Apple had a MacBook model that was canceled and replaced by the MacBook Air. Apple never replaced anything for the MBA. They did take away the white plastic MacBook in favor of just having the MBA and MBP but the MBA never replaced the white MacBook. Besides, you wouldn't want to buy a white MacBook as those featured aged Intel Core 2 Duo processors. They are fine for everyday use but show their old age when it comes to multi-tasking.

Either that or the OP is talking about the mid-2011 MBA models that were replaced by the recent 2012 MBAs. Some clarification is required.

yes an i5 is significantly faster, a second or third generation i5 even more so. core 2 duos are now 4 generations old.

as to what to suggest what do you need, and need it for and to do? pop a question in the WNSIB forum

You can find a used i5 MacBook for less than $900.

Microcenter is offering the early 2011 13" MBP with a Sandy Bridge processor, new, for $999. They are even selling the old white plastic 13" MacBook with a Core 2 Duo processor for $500. Either way, a budget of $900 (add $100 to that and you will be a lot better off) should be enough to buy either the early 2011 or the mid-2012 13" MBP. Spending $900 for a system with a Core 2 Duo processor isn't worth it and you would actually be overpaying.

Apple's even selling quite a few refurbished models for $1000 or less. They have a refurbished October 2011 13" MBP for $930, a mid-2011 13" MBA for the same price, and a 15" MBP with a Core i5 (not Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge) for $1100.
