I have been trying to figure out why my internet downloads off safari keep stopping...My internet seems ok because no other computer in this house has the problem. But I noticed when I DL something and keep the lid open, it seems fine when I go away and come back.
So I think closing the lid and putting the computer into sleep or whatever causes internet connection to be lost. Ideas?
-
Well, DUH if your computer is sleeping then you would lose your connection.
-
When you close the lid, it goes to sleep. Sleep is kinda like Shut Down, all connections are severed.

If you use a download manager like downthemall for firefox, you should be able to resume most file downloads without restarting them.
-
Wow that's one stupid design decision...Didn't it occur to them someone might want to download something and NOT wait at the computer while its downloading? Is there a way to make it so closing the laptop doesn't put the computer to sleep, but still requires password protection upon opening?
-
You might be able to disable sleep in the Power Settings menu.
If not, try:
Download InsomniaX for Mac - Disable sleep mode on an Apple Laptop. MacUpdate.com
or
Lighthead - Caffeine -
It is not a stupid decision. "Sleep" is something that is meant to function that way. And no, would you want your computer to be burnt up when you are carrying it around due to heat? Sleep is one of the ingenious integrated functions of OS X.
You can close it and make it not do anything, but AFAIK there are no ways to protect it via password upon opening without it making it go to sleep as there has to be a trigger for the computer to require a password. -
Is there even an option on native OS like windows to disable sleep if lid is closed? I don't think there is one to the best of my knowledge.
@yoda: Dude, do you even know what sleep is? It basically commits your application settings etc to RAM or perhaps even the disk in an SSD case and then shuts down the hard disk and screen. Now, tell me how a connection would still remain open, whether it is windows or os x? -

There's no need to be condescending. I don't think there was any confusion as to why connections are being closed given that the system is asleep.
You could probably use one of the third party tools above to keep the computer active, then lock the screen manually before closing the lid, or setting the computer to lock automatically with a screensaver. You would control these options in the settings menu. -
Yes windows allows you to "do nothing" when the lid is closed.
I don't have my mbp in front o of me but I know you can do the same in osx. For sure it works in docked mode -

The only time I ever needed that function on my Windows laptop was for my dock. Moving between and meeting and the dock, it was nice to just close the lid and have it not shut down.
If my MBA or MBP are downloading, I just lock the screen and leave the lid open. Not sure why that isn't an option. If you're putting your laptop away in a case or something, then leaving it running is a very bad idea as other have said due to heat. -
I don't understand why you'd close it in the first place...
Set power options for the screen to blacken out when you aren't using it, or set a hot corner you can use to turn off the screen, if thats what your worried about... but why shut it? -
Could be a dust or animal hair issue. I know in my house, with 2 cats and a dog, it can be a problem.
-
For me it's not so much the cat hair, but the cats themselves walking on the keyboard and screwing things up.
-
Here is an idea: don't have a cat
I sometimes don't get why pets like cats or especially dogs are treated like they are humans. -

I can't think of anyone that treats their pet like a human. Seriously, think about it. I'm also not sure how whether your pets are treated more or less like humans would affect whether their hair gets into your electronics, unless your criteria is whether they are allowed in your house. -

I think PETA would like to have a word with you.

around our house & businesses we have running laptops closed up occasionally or regularly for various reasons:
temporary LAN game server
HTPC in the entertainment center
temporary NAS, webserver or mail server
DVR for security cameras at remote sites
advanced routers for emergency services ( disaster planning )
docked to act like a desktop when we need 2 or 3 larger screens
ftp uploader/downloader for site maintenance or hosting transfers
load testing HVAC, networks, SCADA or GIS units
there are a multitude of uses for a closed laptop and I doubt ive touched 1/100 of them -
I hook my MBP up to my TV for watching videos and so it doesn't get dusty, I close the lid... and downloading large files does take some time... so closing the lid over night isn't that bad as well... but insomniaX did not work for me... I still don't know why... it just did not work
(so I ended up with connecting my MBP to my TV every time I need it to stay on
(from time to time I miss windows
)

Does kissing them on face, sleeping with them, or putting them in your lap count? Ok, human kids don't ride in your lap in the front seat, so perhaps ont on this one but maybe I would see a dog with a seat belt on tomorrow on the road.
When I close my MBP lid, internet connection seems to stop...
