This is my first post so go lightly guys, I've been lurking for a while and took the plunge to finally sign up.
I've been a Windows guy my entire life, but I'm sick of the Windows hardware laptops only lasting a couple years (from vaio's to hp's), while my girlfriends 06' macbook has been working like a champ since the start. I finally took the plunge to purchase a MBP 15' last week. It is coming in the mail today, very excited!
My question;
When do you think the Macbook Pro's will go through a total redesign? I think the current MBP are really the best looking laptop computer out there hands down. But do you think they will get redesigned in early 2012? Or stay with this line style like the Lenovo Thinkpad series for a while.
Thanks in advance for your input!
cliffnotes:
- new to forum, just bought a MBP
- curious as to if/when others think the MBP will be redesigned totally
-
No one knows. The rumors around 'liquid metal' are for 2012. I don't think the style will really change much. It will be similar but maybe a little thinner and the port layout will change. They could even do something big like remove the dvd drive on the larger models.
-
Why should they, the only reasons I can think of are the use of liquidmetal (which could make them thinner), or they run out of 16:10 screens.

The essential design of the MacBook Pro has remained the same even dating back to the titanium PowerBook G4. Even major revisions still follow (to some extent) the basic design and color scheme laid out by the PowerBook G4. The use of a new metal likely won't really change anything other than density and weight, the looks will carry over.
However, it should be noted that nobody ever truly knows anything (as in concrete information) about future Apple products until Apple officially announces/releases them. Anything up to that point is pure speculation and rumor even if it is based on "inside information." -
Normally new MacBooks are on a Tuesday. Though Thursdays seem to be the new big days, but since Steve Job's birthday is on a Friday next year and a major revision is due, it could blow the advance planning scheme a bit.
-
Maybe next year. Maybe not.

I'd like to see a black colored MBP or MBA. While I could ship my MBP to Colorware to have them paint it, $500+ is a huge price to pay for it.
-
. But....you said it yourself, you think it's the best looking laptop out there. Many people feel the same way which is why there are so many switchers. SOME of them use them as Windows only machines. No point in Apple changing a working formula anytime soon. Heck, you bought one after all. Enjoy and don't worry about what's coming out in the future. There will always be something new with better specs or a better design. When? Who knows. Use what you've got.

Every time I see "liquid metal" I get an image of T1000 from T2 Judgement Day....now if only my MBP could do all that he could...

I just wouldn't want to wake up one day with a metal arm through my chest, that is when we know our devices have become smarter than us and want to rule the world.
-
the liquid metal with the new scratch resistant nitride coating that apple got a patent to sounds really sweet. not until 2012 im afraid.
-
-
A titanium based Liquidmetal alloy with a black nitride would be awesome.

I really hope apple removes the optical drive on the MBP13 next year. The design is really nice, but it is also kind of boring to see it been around for so long now. I hope they do the total redesign, and make it even slimmer and smaller with no bezel space on the screen.
I'm expecting the new design to happen next year, and until then, I'll live with a lenovo x120e netbook + 4 year old x61t tablet. -
I thought of waiting another year for the redesign, but the resale of these MBP's are so great that I just decided to pull the trigger now. Besides, I thought this last update was going to be THE ONE to change the redesign, whose to say it will change this time around (speaking conservatively).
I don't know how else they can approve without sacrificing performance, but I thought that with the older Macbook Pro. Speaking out of experince of the current MBP, it's so light, skinny, portable, it's incredible with a huge vibrant screen. -
There is no guarantee of a redesign next year anyways, its all rumor! WOuld suck to hold off then next year is just another similar update. Even so the redesign will be a Rev. 1 type product you might not want... better to get the "redesign" in two or three years. -
There is rather simple algorithm -))
You are "kinda" rich and you like new device:
— buy it.
Your current device cant perform something that you need and new one can:
— buy it.
Your current device is more then 3-4 years old:
— buy new one.
Else: don't buy new one. -
They did a great job on the iPad 2: thinner, lighter, same battery. I'm sure that they could provide the same treatment on the MacBook Pro but they don't have to for now. Here's hoping for 2012 - my 2008 MBP more than meets my needs.

Nice algorithm!
I bought the 2011 MBP13 on the day of launch, but then after couple days of using it, I thought I could just wait another year since it has the same design, and I could live with my well built 4 year old thinkpad x61t. The sluggishness I feel on my thinkpad x61t is when running Ubuntu in VMware Unity mode. It's often times very sluggish since it has a Core2Duo L7500. I have 4GB ram, intel SSD, so booting up and file operations are still really fast.
On this MBP13, everything really works smooth and nice. Doesn't heat up at all. But I can wait.. for a year, and there still will be student discount for MBP13. I paid $1281, and it is a really good price for base MBP13 + 3 year warranty.
By the way, this is my first time using a mac, I think the OS is well thought out, and works nicely. Touch pad is really smooth too. Why can't Windows laptops create something like this? The battery life is really crazy on this thing too. I'm guessing I can get up to 9 hours of actual typing / viewing pdf files with 4/16 brightness, no keyboard light, wireless and bluetooth on.
I think if a redesign happens, they can probably chop off an inch of width on this if they redesign it. I kind of don't like the half inch of extra space on both ends of the keyboard. This is one of the reasons I don't want the 15" and 17". -

And speaking of designs...
Why does the matte screen come with the ugly raised white bezel instead of the smooth black one
I'm almost tempted to send it back and get it replaced with a glossy screen... -
the screen is glossy because its a single piece of glass over the front. there is no extra bezel added on... now if they take the glass off so they can make a matte version, they have to add something to cover up that extra space. I guess that black might have looked bad since its going to look a lot different than the screen.
-
Well, it's just a minor complaint, but I still feel the matte screen as a whole looks ugly. Ah well, I guess being able to read the screen in direct sunlight is more important than looks...
...or maybe not -
apple seems to be planning on using oled logos on the liquid metal body to make it more futuristic. i lik the idea.
Apple MacBook Pro with OLED -

I would change that to "it is rumored that Apple is is planning" as that guy doesn't offer any information to his source other than making it look like he pulled it out of his butt. I could very well go blog about how Apple is going to make the back of the display a complete LCD and it would have just as much validity as what that guy has said.
-
but there does exist a couple of OLED patents by apple filed last week..
-

Apple also holds many other patents (some of them being filed rather recently) that we don't see in their final end products. Tech companies often file for hundreds and thousands of patents even though they don't have any products out using them. For example, back in early 2009, Apple filed a patent for stealth biometric security with the iPhone. Many thought it would be seen in the iPhone 3Gs as some type of fingerprint reader. Nope, we haven't seen the light of day with any of the biometric features Apple has patents for. Apple also filed a patent just last month for a smart capacitive stylus. The iPad 2 was announced and guess what? No intelligent capacitive stylus.
I can keep going on with examples like this. A patent filing by a company may or may not mean anything. The way the blog is worded makes it sound like Apple is definitely going to change the logo to an OLED display. Apple could very well do something like that. However, it is nothing more than vague speculation at this point even though Apple filed for patents. That doesn't change a thing. -
@kornchild2002 Guess ur rit..
