The basic question:
Refurbished Macbook 2.0 CD, 512 Ram, 80 Gig, and Black ($999)
vs.
New MacBook 1.83 C2D, 512 Ram, 60 Gig, and White ($1049 w/ stu. dis.)
My initial idea was get a refurbished Macbook for 800, but i found that i have more money than i guessed and I would like a blackbook for a cooler look (plus, the girlfriend has a white one and i thought it would be sexy to contrast it...don't judge me!). Being refurbished really doesn't bother me (nor does the 50 dollar difference), but my question is how does the 2.0 CD compare to the 1.83 C2D? Is the 2.0 still more powerful? Does Battery life change much? Heat? Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks!

The 1.83 is probably the better processor, but the 2.0 is definitely the better value. Overall performance should not be to different between the two, but you will get a larger hard drive and the color you want for less money. I say probably go refurb unless you really want a C2D.

The C2D are about 10% faster overall than CD so 1.83 C2D = 2.0 CD. Roughly speaking.
I know your a student on a budget - but just for the sake of pointing out a great deal I thought I might pass on this link on the previous gen MacBook Pro using the older CD - but with lots of extra goodies like the ATIx1600 Graphics and superdrive.

PS.... I also saw this 1.83 CD for 869 and no tax.....

Well, it doesn't really matter all that much between the two, except for the color and the HDD. Some things to keep in mind though:
Discolouration issues on the white MB. Palm rests get all yellow, and returning it to an Apple store to replace the plastic probably will take AGES...
Black Macbook not glossy. This is more or the less personal preference and also, it doesn't suffer from discolouration.
Some people say the Black MB has a higher resell value. Black is more or the less a novelty to many people...
Heat issues are the same, which is a bit of a shame.
C2D Macbooks have a faster 6x Superdrive, as opposed to no superdrive at all in the older CD models.
Many things to consider, though it depends on what you want or need. These issues are in no particular order, just a couple of differences between the two. -

i also in quite the same dillema
i had sold my 2.0 CD MBP because i thought that loepard will be coming in january and decided to buy the new MBP by then , but after some research the leopard is only out about spring 07 and the my guess is maybe the brand new MBP will be launch a few months after taht
but too bad i already sold my MBP
and now i just life with fujitsu window lappie
aND I CAN'T take it anymore, living without OS X just too much for me
heheheh
so decided to get the MB Instead which is INMHO nicer model, and i don't do gaming , but i just wish there's a 1440x900 screen resolution on the MB
anyway i was given the choice in my regular apple store here in my country
between:
-MB 1.83 Ghz C2D
and
-MB 2.0 Ghz CD
both are brand new and both are on the same price !
so i can't decide which one to get
is the old MB, imean the CD MB suffer from all the macbook syndrome eg:
discouloration, heat, random shut down, etc ?
will it be saver if i buy the 1.83Ghz C2D ?
actually i also want to buy the cheapest one cause i'm planning to get MBP when Rosetta comes out
and if i get the cheapest one, i'll lose less when selling it right "
hehhe
thx. -
But you are right, the black is not a glossy black. It's a matte black and
IMHO looks like utter crap. It should be glossy not matte.
And it's a DL superdrive as well. While DL discs still are not cheap, next year they should be cheap enough to consider purchasing as backup discs. -
If you have a local Apple store I'd go to that first and see if they have any 'refreshed' MBs. Note that refreshed is not the same as refurb. A guy on MacRumors went to his local Apple Store and walked out with a refreshed iMac 20" for about $1020. Ridiculous!! He may have been lucky but refreshed Macs are better than refurbs. From what I remember, refreshed are returned due to buyer remorse where refurbs most likely had a problem and had to be fixed (I could be wrong though). Anyone know for sure?
Anyways, I read a benchmark and the 1.83 C2D performed as fast as the 2.0 CD. Go for the C2D.
Which Macbook is Better?
