Well, there are different models of each... so it's impossible to say based on general categories like that. And also, you don't say whether you're referring to the white Macbook or unibody Macbook.

i found that apple battery life claim to be conservative and real-life accurate.

I currently very much doubting to sell my Sony Vaio FW21M mainly because of the size (a bit too big for daily use) and battery life. I'm doubting between the cheapest Macbook or the Macbook Pro (both new unibodies). The MB would cost me €1.200, the Macbook Pro can be mine for €1.500. Main use of the notebook would be on-the-road surfing, video etc. I do like to play a game occasionally but it's far from the main use for the laptop (got a very high end gaming pc for that). One thing that kinda worries me in the MB is the small resolution (being used to 1680x1050 on the desktop and 1600x900 on the Vaio).

if you have the means then i suggest the MBP, it get more usable/comfortable screen resolution, have far better screen (most noteably the viewing angle), better speaker.

it is not as nice and compact (and cute) as the 13" MB though.

but i think the screen is a deal breaker, if you have the mean, get the MBP.

    no i didn't :p

it will reduce battery life if he chooses to use it.

i think the 9400 is ever so sufficient in day-to-day activity............ unless!!! when snowleopard comes out, you wishes you have the 9600m gt, the upcoming os x "snow leopard" will comes with a gpu accelerated processing capability, that helps the cpu do computational task.
