    Is it e-IPS? H-IPS? S-IPS? P-IPS? Something else altogether?

The 15.4" RMPBs have two different panels, a LG AH-IPS and a Samsung PLS. AH-IPS seems to be a recent (2011) evolution of E-IPS in that they are both designed with a primary goal of increasing light transmission for lower power consumption, but AH-IPS provides higher PPI. I don't know much about PLS other than that it's similar to IPS and also came out in 2011 touting increased light transmission. I haven't seen anything regarding bit depth. I assume 8-bit, but I read LG makes AH-IPS panels in 6-bit, 8-bit, and 10-bit forms so it's possible it could be 6-bit.

    Thanks for the info :)

With regards to the bit depth - come to think of it, given the unique nature of the RMBP, it's surprising that none of the review sites with display expertise have done an in-depth analysis of the retina display.

What would be a Windows computer that has a good resolution even if it's not good as the MBP?

depends on the size that you are looking for, also the form factor

UX51/u500 and the s15 for the rmbp 15

    z13 for the rmbp 13

outside those they all have some kind of limitation, either the cpu in the case of the ux31 or the thickness and weight for all the 1080p panels out there,

if you don't care about the thickness or the weight, what other choices are there?

in the 15''? you want the gaming stations from clevo or the msi gt 60, aside that look at workstations

the best panel in notebooks is the dream color 2, in the 17''.

Is there a way to get a 17inch laptop with good screen that is a few years old so that it's a lot cheaper than its original price?

I think you should be better served on the what notebook should I buy section, fill out the faq, but yes you can, usually at the outlet they have some great prices, calling hp, dell, lenovo, usually net some discounts

as Karamazovmm has said it may not hurt to drop by the WNSIB forum for a visit.

But for your information you can get Dell refurb m6700's with a 1080 10 bit IPS screen ( 100% aRGB ) in their outlet on occasion. the HP Elitebook 8740w can be found rather inexpensive with the older 1200 line DreamColor 2 IPS Screen, which again is 100% aRGB and does on the fly aRGB/NTSC/sRGB/rec 709 conversions. The later 8760W can also be found reasonably priced with the 1080 version of the DreamColor 2 Panel of the same spec but better response times. the 8770W is still a bit expensive unless you get a base unit and do all the upgrades yourself.
