My friend just gave me her White Macbook pre 2007 i beleive to fix because i fix all her computersbut this is the first time im trying to fix a mac
. Upon pressing the power button im greeted by the BONG tone and a white screen. Then i start hearing the HD making some very messed up noises witch to me are the fimiliar sound of a hd failure and so i beleive this is the problem. After a minute or two i get a flashing folder with a ? on it witch means it can't find the system files it needs to boot. So i tryed booting from the Tiger discs but it will not boot. Now this is leading me to beleive that it is the logic board. Right now im waiting till morning to buy a torx t8 so i can replace the HD.
Right now im thinking my next step should be reseting the Pram. Any help that will help me fix her comp would be appreciated![]()

I just used a small Philips head screw driver for the hard drive replacement. Its very easy on those white mb's. Just remove the battery>then 3 screws on the long thin L-bracket to reveal the memory slots and hdd bay. Pull out the hdd and your done.
A pair of pliers will work great for removing the small screws on the hdd casing.
As for booting from the DVD, just a question, do you have a french of US keyboard layout? Its possible that the key-mapping has switched between the two, thus try pressing the option(alt) key instead of C during bootup. Then select the DVD drive.
good luck

Just tried ALT and it brought the mouse up and i could move it but stayed at the white screen -
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
Torx drivers are readily available at most hardware stores, either individually or as part of a set. -
holding Alt (Option) down will bring up a screen showing all bootable devices you can choose from to boot. If nothing ever appears on it after a few minutes, nothing is bootable on the machine. Try putting in the OS disc, and make sure its the right one with the actual OS on it and not the one with extra applications, which isnt bootable.

I did put the disk in and it wont boot from it. Once i get a torx and replace the HD ill know if its the logic board or not i really hope its not

how is replacing the hard drive going to help if you cant install anything on it?

Cleared the Pram and it boot to the apple logo and booted the cd went to check the Hd and it doesnt show up. So the HD is definatly dead. Then it crashed and wouldnt boot to the apple screen and it just stays at the white screen. I reset the pram again and it didnt work again so maybe the watch battery on the logic board is dead?

if its a macbook and not an old ibook.. a battery shouldn't have anything to do with it... and even most of the latest ibooks it wouldn't either...
could be the hard drive.. could be the controller if its having trouble with multiple drives...
but if it booted once... it really should boot again. If your only trying the hold down C method... I can hardly ever get that timed right to work.. Option works better.... but if it cant pick up a bootable CD/DVD you need to try some other bootable discs. Try anything thts bootable, even a Windows install disc, or Linux... (don't actually install just get to see it on the boot menu by holding Option at the chime until the menu appears) If it can at least find a bootable disc, its probably just your hard drive, and maybe your OS disc. -

Ill try that. Right now im waiting till my mom has free time to drive me to the nearest hardware store to find a torx t8. But i hope i can fix it. If not my friend just said trash it. I might just keep it and buy a logic board for it and give it to my brother

And this computer is far out of warranty but i heard of apple fixing it for free anyway even when out of warranty. Do i just walk into an apple store and ask?
