Why does Safari 4 display fonts differently (vs. Firefox 3)?

That's basically my question. I've noticed that in Safari 4.0.5, fonts are just a little bit different as compared to what they look like in Firefox 3.6.3. They look like they're almost the same font, but it's as if Safari fonts are little more... squatter, and as if the spacing between letters is just a bit different.

Why is this, and can it be changed?

I ask because I'm trying to find the perfect browser in OS X. Firefox was always great in Win XP / Vista / 7, but as I've mentioned, its Flash capability is garbage in this OS. Chrome is better, but its lack of native in-browser PDF support without having to resort to Google Docs is just silly (and even that doesn't work for a major source of PDFs I use, which is a dealbreaker for me). Safari's ability to render Flash is great, but then I lose my beloved cmd-(1, 2, etc.) shortcut to switch to the first tab, second tab, and so on.

    Irritating.
