Will all the new software for leopard work completely the same with tiger? I'm debating if I need to upgrade as some other financial things have become more important.

If there is software which says it requires 10.5 as minimum, then it will most likely not work with anything older than Leopard. I don't believe there are any major software currently out like that, however.

This is like those when will DX10 only games appear questions. Technically, programmers can make Leopard only software, but it isn't likely that they will for the forseeable future, ie. the next 2 years. Leopard just doesn't have a large enough market, especially with Jobs saying Tiger was the most successful Mac OS ever, so it would be unprofitable for them to do it. The only exceptions are specific system utilities like ****tail which already has a Leopard only version, and there may be a few games that are Leopard only after a year if Leopard's OpenGL implementation is superior to Tiger's and Apple stops providing updated drivers for Tiger. But productivity software will continue to support Tiger as the convention is to support the last 2 major OS releases.

EDIT: Hmm, it looks like the system tool I was referring to got censured.

Bento is Leopard only, as are a few system utilities (such as MacFUSE 10.5).

Even if some software in Leopard online, usually developers (in both free and paid programs) will offer older versions to those people who havn't made the jump to Leopard yet.

Obviously it depends on the dev, but so far I've seen them releasing versions for tiger, and leopard if they are not compatible.

Yes, unfortunately it censors that, as the forum software just isn't smart enough to distinguish between how its used and when it's acceptable and when it's not. I assume everyone knows why "c-o-c-k-tail" was censored in "****tail" ;).

Which reminds me, the funniest unintentional forum censor I've seen here on NBR is when someone tried to post a new thread with the title "Overclocking", but spelled it wrong and it showed up as "Over****ing" :D.
