    Hi guys,

I've been a pc user for quite a long time and I've decided to get a macbook pro. I've been reading posts on this forum for a couple of months now and I'd like to have some advice.

I'm planning on getting the macbook pro directly at an apple store but I want to make sure I get one of the latest revisions available (due to the heat and noise issues.) My question is, how can I check that? how can I know which week that laptop has been issued? (week 10, week 15, etc) ... is there a way of checking directly on the box? is it based on a serial number?

Any other advices would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    C

The MBP serial number (which is located on the side of the box) is formatted like this W8612. I believe the W8 is the product code. What you need to be concerned with are the next set of numbers. The 6 is the year (2006) and the 12 is the week number the machine was manufactured. So in this example the MBP was manufacturer the twelve week of 2006.

So right now new machines should be around week 21 or 22. BTW, the new revision of MBP's came out last week so you should be guaranteed to receive a fairly new machine.

In the event that you do have issues (or receive an older model that has problems), you can always take the notebook back the Apple store and exchange it for a newer model.

I got one of the revised MacBook Pro's with a glossy screen (W8617) and I have no problems with heat. Received it yesterday and it haven't been turned off yet.

I ordered a MacBook Pro through Apple Store (Education) and just got it this morning. It's a week 21 model. The serial number can be seen on the box, located on the side opposite of the handle.

The computer is hot to touch on certain areas during regular use of the web. It didn't burn me, it just was too hot for you to be exposing your bare skin to for long periods of time. I can't tell you if this is normal for a laptop since I don't have a frame of reference, but I think it's more than acceptable if you use it while it's laying on a table. I have left it on pretty much all day, about 14 hours and it didn't shut off or anything due to excessive heat. It is a very quiet machine.

Oh I might add, that I am very impressed with the shipping rate and performance coming from the Apple Store through the FedEx 2-day option. Twice I ordered from the store with that option and I recieve it days ahead of time.

    Hi guys,

Thanks for the reply. I did get the macbook pro yesterday. It is a week 17. I got the 2.16 core duo model - 15".

I can't hear any noise, the laptop is indeed very quiet. It does get hot, but only on the left side speaker and at the back. I dont use it on my lap so I couldnt really tell about the bottom.

So far I'm loving it, first time mac user. Discovering such a nice OS is a plain joy.

    Cheers!
