Will the iBooks have a G5 processor soon? I plan to buy an iBook in 1 1/2 years and I'm just wondering. Also will they still have OS X Tiger in 1 1/2 years or will they have a new version before then?

The Powerbook G5 is rumoured to come out Q4 of this year, so my guess? The IBook dual-core G4 by the end of this year and the G5 by late Q1 to early Q2 2006 perhaps?

Don't hold your breat for it. I think Apple is hitting a wall right now with the G5. If they still manage to put a G5 into a PB or iBook, you can kiss the slim factor goodbye because the systems will ended up looking like a fat Dell P4 system.

Freescale might have something up their sleeve to provide a variation of the G4 of some sorts.

I agree. The G4/74xx is a Desktop/Notebook processor. The G5 is a Server processor. Just think of this. Intel has both Notebook/Desktop processors (Pentium M/Pentium 4), and Server processors (Xeon). And you sure don't see any Xeon notebooks do you? This is reason why Intel has the P4 Extreme Edition, which is (IIRC) just a cut down Xeon. And it still isn't good enough for a Notebook. This whole thing is the reason the Power Mac G5 is the only mainstream desktop with a liquid cooling system. However, it's possible that the upcoming 970GX and 970MP Processors will finaly be cool enough for more mainstream use (ie WITHOUT liquid cooling). It's also possible that Freescale's next-gen PowerPC is ready by now. Apparently it's a G4 Derivative with Dual-Core support. Perhaps theres a chance that this chip will get into Powerbooks and iBooks before the Dual-Core Pentium Ms and Turion 64s ship.

Thanks, although it wasn't a real big deal if i got a G5, I just wanted to check. I'm glad that Tiger should still be the OS then.

    Never.

Now it is quite obvious, after the switch to Intel.

    Ivar,

This thread was started before the announcement was made that Apple will be switching to Intel in 2006 (the announcement was made mid-June, this thread was started at the end of April). You are of course correct, the processors in the Ibook should be switched to Intel in 2006.

Also, I think the new OS 10.5 (Leopard) is due at the beginning of 2007.

Exactly, G5 iBooks and Powerbooks will not be seen, Steve Jobs said in the wwdc 2005 that The G5 runs too hot and won't be as efficient as the intel chip, well now that the IBM powerpc 970MP Dual core processors will be coming that, they be better now. I don't think that apple will waste time bringing out a new product i.e. G5 ibook when they want to switch to intel, it just doesn't fit in with their business plan. :apple:

I think that the Yonah processor/chipset may be the first Intel chip to appear in Apple's lineup. So, it's quite possible that the laptops will be dual-core, though single core versions of Yonah are going to come out too.

Wont they have to be emulating everything since it's a pc cpu? Just that sound of it makes me uneasy.

Nope - Mac OSx in its roots is nothing but NeXTstep / OpenStep which used to be available for Intel, PowerPC, Sparc and HP processors.
Apple basically stripped it down to PowerPC-only, added some good lookin apps and sold it as MacOSx. Now that the first x86 versions of MacOSx have leaked you can see they run just fine on PCs. Actually, if installed on a full blown P4 (e.g. 3.3GHz) you might notice it beats any G4 by far!

I highly doubt that the iBook/PowerBook line will ever see a G5 processor. The G5 processor is not bad but it take a lot of power to run the processor. A PowerBook with a G5 procossor would be similar to todays Pentium 4 notebooks in that it would only have 30-45 minutes of battery life and there would be a lot of heat issues. Apple would not make a notebook that gets less than one hour of battey life let alone 30 minutes. I imagine Apple's notebook line will receive a version of the Yonah processor in that the iBooks will be single cored processors and the PowerBooks will be dual cored processors.
