By the end of the summer, they will probably have the next generation of Intel processor. However, that's probably the only difference; there will almost assuredly be no cosmetic changes.

I'd also say there's a fairly decent chance of a gpu upgrade. Personally, I'd like to see the 3650 make its way into the MBP. My reasoning is that they just put out the 3870 for the Mac Pro so maybe Apple's pendulum is swinging back toward ATI. No one knows for sure though.

mikespit1, I want to note though that the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 has been available for the Mac Pro long before this ATI Radeon 3870, so its more an "balancing the score" than towards ATI :).

A MacBook Pro update by the end of summer, almost for sure, as Montevina will be arriving soon and the MBP keeps with the newer hardware. In terms of a redesign though, that could happen, or it might not. So its hard to say.

i really hope u all are right on the montevina upgrade. although, after looking at other sites, it would appear that the release (if it is just a CPU and GPU upgrade) could be pulled off by the end of july. (this is based off what HP and Lenovo have said about their new laptops) all intel is waiting for is FCC approval, and wireless N approval, so that means that they have the chips, they are just waiting to be sent off. so HP and Lenovo are planning mid-july releases of their new stuff, so perhaps Apple could do the same too? does that make sense to any1? or are my facts flawed.

and i was on the apple insider forums last night, those guys are convinced that the MBP and MB will be completely redone/designed before the summer ends. however we on this forum, aren't quite that optimistic.

i hear that if they do redesign the MBP and MB.. that they won't be announced until Macworld 2009 in January. :( this is when Apple apparently reveals new computer info. I too am hoping that the MB will finally get the aluminum case redesign by the end of summer with the Montevina refresh..

yea, i think a full re-design won't be until january either. however, how hard would it be to give it an aluminum shell? idk.

They may do a special event to release the new MBPs, similar to what they did with the Aluminum iMacs.

The way Apple works, usually minor Mac updates are done without a special event, and just a website update. More major redesigns or new introductions usually happen at special events with keynotes involved.

The two keynotes that are "for sures" every year is Macworld Expo in January, and then WWDC in around June. There's usually an iPod event around September, but those aren't as "for sure" as Macworld and WWDC, where the main reason of those two events are for expos and conferences, and not just a media release like an iPod event.

So, it is likely that Apple may deliberately wait out before introducing the new Macs, but I'd say if there will be redesigns it'd be around August, so they can hit the holiday season (which they would miss if they release at Macworld).

    Wouldn't the 3650 be a downgrade from the 8600GT?

Yes, almost certain the MacBook Pro will get a Montevina update, redesign less certain. The MacBook may or may not be upgraded to Montevina...Apple's past record has shown that the MacBook isn't kept as up-to-date as the MBP, maybe to make more differences between the two notebooks.

now its just a matter of will it be in july or will it be in august. i think they'd sell more if they go it out by july... intel has the chips.... so go go apple!

From reading your posts, it sounds like your almost certain that the MacBook Pro's will be updated with Montevina by August.

I'm trying to put my money on that and believe you, but I have a concern.
How long does it usually take for these chipsets to be implemented?
If the new processors are supposedly coming out July 14th, won't it take time for Apple to actually be able to have them ready to sell in their systems?

That is unpredictable at the moment. Apple will occasionally get Intel chips before the rest of the manufacturers, so they may get it in advance of July 14th, but if not, then Apple tends to update their MacBook Pro line within a month of Intel introduction :).

Yes, Apple is unpredictable, unpredictably slow, that is, in updating things.

In the case of Santa Rosa, it took the aprox. 2 months for them to have them in their Macbook Pros...

I really really hope they can have them ready immediately this time.

I was actually counting on a redesign at the WWDC that just passed. There were hints at it, but nothing happened :(
I doubt there'll be one this year, but we'll probably see a cpu/gpu upgrade in a few months
