    Hi!
I have been searching about this issue for a while and couldn't find a answer anywhere.

It has been some months now that I am using WinXP on my MacBook Pro with parallels and everything is working fine.
Recently Ive been wanting to watch some DVDs which are region 2. Since my Mac is blocking change of regions to 3-4 times,Ive decided to watch them on my WinXP using region free software.
It comes to this that they just wont play! I tried on real1 and WMP and VLC. last time I tried on WMP I could hear some broken sound of the title menu music.. but no image what so ever.
I just dont understand this problem and ways to solve it!! I have both DVDs region 1 and 2 and want to watch them both!
Please if anyone has some insights about this issue I'd be very grateful!!
    :)

Well dvd region free is legal software, so I guess from that point of view, ultra isn't really breaking any laws.
I also feel your pain, I have alot of region 1 and 4 dvd's, and since switching to mac, they have been gathering dust unwatched due to the inability to watch them.
The only solution which doesn't always work is to try mac the ripper or handbrake to rip the dvd's to your hdd sans protection.
Its a shame that dvdregionfree doesn't work under XP, I hadn't thought of do this, I might give it a try when I get home tonite.
will let u know if I have any luck

dvd region free is "legal software" that is a definition that many incl. US is looking into and on some countries it's not legal

Have you ever tried using VLC?

I dont think it's affected by regions, not sure though.

As far as I understand it (and I'm in the same boat, living overseas with various region DVDs and a Macbook), it has to do with both the OS and the disk drive.

Like the other posters said, just Google the problem. I think for some models you can reflash the firmware on the drive, but that's pretty risky. Another option would be to replace the drive with a slimline one off Newegg.

Both of these options are expensive and not idea. And like Maceto says, DVD regions are not law, they were only invented by the studios to reap larger profits.

But I should stop, before I get banned. ;-p

Apple should have a guide on how to unlock it. It's required in some countries.

AnyDVD will remove the region code for playback, but it costs money.

Ok so I just tried out dvd region free via parallels and vlc, but no go :(
You could try a number of different players but I have a feeling that its probably gonna be the same story.
My only advice is that it could work via boot camp.
I don't have or want boot camp so can't help you out there.
    good luck

There's a 99% chance it will not work with Boot Camp, since both Boot Camp & Parallels use the same DVD drive.

This link gives a lot more info. Just blame Mat5hita drives.

I also have DVDs in multiple regions. I use PowerDVD on Windows and it always works without a problem. It's not a free program, but you can give the trial a go.
If the free alternatives don't work out then give that a go! (I got it free with my external sound card :-D

PowerDVD is not a region free player, you must have some other software to remove the region codes.

What model and firmware version DVD player/writer do you have?

It's possible that the newer (and I'm assuming your MBP is newer) drives don't have the same limitation as the old ones.
