Hi there! So I've bought this new external hdd and formatted it to hfs+ since I will get a mac(when ever my money comes in). I use MacDrive to do this. Now I'm transferring my music to it and I'm running to problem with foreign characters in file names. The file name would display fine under windows but once it's dragged into the hdd it'd be all underscore (____). Some of the time the folder will refuse to transfer at all because of the character. I have no idea whether the character are unicode, or anything all those are too technical for me, but if there's a guide I wouldn't mind reading it : ) Here's an example of the characters: カゼノネ I simply copy/paste that from the file name in windows.

My question is how would I go about change the file name using foreign character on this hfs+ hdd while under windows? and if I do it under a mac(when I get it) would the character display fine under window? I don't mind doing them all manually again if there's no converter or anything, but I want the file name to have foreign character and display properly in both os.

Thanks, and sorry if it's all mushed up : )

Windows doesn't support HFS(+) natively. You need to use a program like MacDrive 7 to deal with HFS or you need to format your hard disk to FAT32 to have it be seen by both Windows and Mac OSX.

Yes, I'm using MacDrive to access the hfs+ format. However when I move a file with foreign character name from my window to the hdd it all turns into ___. This is really a big problem for iTunes. So what I'm wondering if there's a way to type(preferably copy/paste) in those special chars in the hard drive while I'm still in windows. Doing a regular copy/paste of those special chars into the file name in the hdd doesn't work.

    Thanks : )

I just check my Macdrive on my bookcamp install. Same problem. But if i create this in OS X it is fine. So i created it is OS X anbd then looked at it in Macdrive....Showed up as _____
So i have to say it is a limitation of Macdrive.
HSFExplorer sees it fine, but you can only read from the partition.

I found out. Under MacDrive option there's the File Names, check Backup/File transfer. This will keep all character information the same.
