Hey all. I'm looking to buy my first laptop, and was looking at the 1Ghz IBook as one of the options. I want to have wireless internet capabilities, but the cost of Apple's wireless router (Airport Basestation) seems extremely high for a wireless router. I'm just wondering if the Airport Card will communicate properly with any wireless router (eg Linksys, Netgear etc), or whether the Airport Basestation is required. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,
    Dennis

hey Dennis. Yes, the Apple router (Airport Basestation) is just an 802.11b/g type of router so you can just opt for another companies router instead. I'm guessing the Airport has some other features that Linksys or Netgear might not, but if all you want is to broadcast an internet connection wirelessly then find something cheaper.

    Hey Banner,

I would definately go with a Netgear G Router. Your new iBook will no doubt have the Airport Extreme card (wireless G). I would advise you to stay away from a Linksys Router as they don't play as well with MAC. Be sure that when you set up your encryption on the router to type a $ sign before the passord on your mac to get it to connect. Let us know if you have any trouble!
