I'm not sure what happened in version 3.0 -> 3.1, but Safari now runs REALLY fast. Even scrolling up and down pages is smoother.

For example, go to www.engadget.com with Firefox and Safari. Scroll up and down the page after it's loaded, using the scroll bar on the right. Look how smooth Safari is now! Crazy!!

Now if I could just figure out a way to make my Logitech mouse scroll wheel scroll faster in Safari (works fine in Firefox), I may even consider actually USING Safari!

Dude, it's not even me imagining it. Everything loads and runs miles faster compared to Firefox. I'm switching back and forth, and it's not even remotely subtle. Safari is finally making a comeback!

Go visit about 100 webpages in Safari with your cookie settings not set on Never. Who is faster now?

I've always preferred safari as to firefox, only time I use firefox is if a website that has certain java scripts needs firefox.

Is there a way to set the Mail app to open links in a new TAB, NOT a new window?

I said not set on Never. So, either set on Always, or on Only from sites you navigate to. After visiting around 100 sites, your cookie jar would become very full. And, thanks to the exhaustive search algorithm Apple implemented for the cookie jar, when you visit a website such as NotebookReview, which puts about 5 cookies on your machine every page, Safari will be reading through every cookie in that bloated jar 5 times per page (so if you open up 3 threads in different tabs, it's 15 times). And, as you can imagine, that is very painful.

Apologies. Read that wrong. I've got about 20 tabs open now. No issues. I'll let you know if that changes. Is there a speedy way to test your thesis?

you have to understand that performance of web browsers are usually dealing with "benchmarks" that involve measurements that are under 1 second.

I really like Safari, but it has no chance against Firefox for me, there is no way i can live without Google Browser Sync, and some other Firefox extensions that I rely upon.

Are you comparing to FF2 or FF3b4?

I find them about equal speed. The FF3b4 has improved over the FF3b3. It was impossible for me to keep FF2 or FF3B3 open and play WoW. Even a single tab and it would have my FPS. Then again, Mozilla is not known for good memory management :p So I've been using Safari (not the newly released one) and it's been very smooth. Though it lacks support for basic utilities... such as FTP.

BTW, is 3.1 still a beta? WTF is Apple thinking having the entire Leopard community be beta testers?

If you are really keen to see your Safari slow down to a crawl, simply set cookies to Always and disable the pop-up blockers/ad blockers, and use Safari as your main web browser for a week (if you surf as much as me). Then, when you come back here, middle-click on 5 or so topics on one board in quick succession. Your Safari should start beachballing and perhaps even crash.

However, this is easily solved by emptying your cookie jar. But some of us prefer not to type in their user credentials everywhere every week.
You could try to manually clean up your cookie jar, but that is a nightmare compared to Firefox, Opera, Camio, IE, etc.

I have to agree; Safari 3.1 is fast. I just did a comparison on some sites that usually jitter as I scroll down (engadget is one of them) and they were all silky smooth in scrolling and noticeably faster in loading. I can't compare to FF but I compared it to Safari 3.0 and IE7 on my PC.

    3.0 to 3.1 is a good update. :)

I've been a Firefox fan, but gotta agree - Safari is zippy now... but point taken, let's see how it does after a week of accumulating cookies. Now if they could just get rid of that annoying "you have more than two tabs open, are you sure you want to close Safari" message....

Personally, I like that message since sometimes I forget or don't notice I have open tabs. If you DON'T like it, do this:

Preferences, Tabs, - and then take the check out of "Confirm when closing multiple pages."

    Problem solved! Yay!

Let's hope this cookie issue doesn't surface...

Ah, i think I know the problem that you are referring to now!

I hated that so much. I'd call it jumpy more than jittery. I had major problems scrolling through PDF's as well on Tiger. Just had me thinking of that in here...

I noticed that Safari is faster now, too. I use Firefox primarily, but when I want to add someone's MySpace pictures to my iPhoto, I use Safari, since that function is only a right-click away.

Safari 3.0 was fast, 3.1 is blazing. I have the Windows version of Safari 3.1 and it runs at almost double the speed of Internet Explorer.

Then there's definitely something wrong somewhere on the system, as I have about 45 tabs open right now with no issue.

Just for fun, I clicked my Bookmarks Menu and chose "Open in tabs" which opened ALL of my bookmarks (72 of them). Still have no issues. You might want to try fully uninstalling Safari and removing prefs etc etc, and then a reinstall.

    maybe i should do that.

so, to uninstall safari, just drag the app to the trash can, and hit empty trash (or secure empty), right?

Here's what I found for you to delete, aside from dragging the app to the trash:

BUT I'm not sure how good an idea it is to delete it..... It's "sort-of" like Internet Explorer for Windows i.e. a part of the OS. I'd ask someone if they know, or do a hunt online...

It might be a problem with your Safari preferences as opposed to your Safari application. Try deleting the Safari preferences folder (~/Library/Safari) and the com.apple.Safari.plist file at ~/Library/Preferences first. See if that solves your problems (you will lose all your safari settings, including bookmarks and history).

I've been using it since yesterday's update, and I don't think I'll go back to Firefox. If there's a way to stop Safari downloading files automatically when you click the download link (I want to hit OK when I download something!), I'll probably never go back.

OK, so after 12 days of using it, I still like it a lot, but I have noticed it using an INCREASINGLY large amount of memory with very few tabs open. I just had to close Safari because it was using 490MB of memory with only 4 tabs open!

Is this the cookie memory leak issue?

OK so now I have a bigger issue:

I was trying to sell something on eBay, and I realized I couldn't copy and paste pictures into the body of my text, whereas I CAN on Firefox. I've noticed this on several websites that something is just missing there! Is there something I need to enable to make Safari do this? Help!

You say that like Internet Explorer has the best track record known to man.

I wouldn't say that Safari is full of holes either. There has been a few exploits that have been patched, and a new one that operates in a similar manner but with a different vulnerability.

Chances are slim to none that anybody will bother making a site that attacks Safari's vulnerabilities to violate your computer because the market share of Safari is 5%.

Either way, I am very happy with Firefox, but I wish it was Cocoa damnit!

In all defense of Microsoft, it took vista 2 days with third party apps to be hacked into. So it seems that IE7 on Vista is fairly secure. It is sad that it took only 2 mins for OSX/Safari to be hacked.

Everybody is reading that out of context.

Three professionals that work for a security company worked for three weeks to figure out an exploit specifically for Mac OS X and Safari. It took two minutes to run through, including having one of the staff view a script that would allow this to happen.

The exploit could easily work in Windows with a few modifications using Safari, but under the rules this same exploit could not be used on any other platform.

IE7 can still have a similar vulnerability ran on it, but it will pop up an error about a funny script, and ask to "Cancel" or "Allow".

Also, The second day only ran for about 5 hours, because the time slots were not being filled up. This means that each laptop could be attacked up to 10 times. (Doesn't mean each of them were).

Edit; I also don't want to sound like a "fanboy" of Apple products at all (And the term can be spread to all manufactures of anything, not just Apple products), but every Microsoft fanboy has been bashing Apple users with this crap all week. They read an abbreviated version that highlights "Apple failed first", and don't get the details. Go read some real security journals first before blabbing on.

My new mbp 2.6ghz with 4gb ram smears when I 2 finger scroll, on pdfs and on websites... It's updated with the current Safari, but I'm wondering what the deal is. I like to scroll fast through things, but it's annoying when my lightning fast mac jumbles/smears lines in text...?
