Please don't flame me I am proud owner of MacBook Pro. But I'm just saying if they entered some kind of licensing deal with Microsoft, and gave the option of buying a copy of Windows along with os x I think they would make so much money. Apple computers are so much better made, if they also came with Windows that would be killer. Once again let me restate that I love OS X![]()
Edit: Lol would apple sell more -->COMPUTERS<-- if they gave the option of windows.
COMPUTERS.... not MONEY
thank you
-
-
More money? Possibly.
More hassles? Definitely. I'm a one week convertee to OS X and I definitely appreciate not having to install an antivirus software or antispyware software. -
-
Eh....
Having the option to order Windows isn't in itself a bad idea. However, I feel you mean buying your Mac and having windows preinstalled. That won't work well.
Currently, they simple image the HDD that they put in the MBP. If they added this option, then you would have to have your drive custom imaged. This would probably be a slow and costly operation for Apple to perform. They could offer a single partition size if you wanted, but say it's a 50 gig partition, that may be okay for some, but not for others. It just does not seem very feasible. -
i think they would make a ton of money if they released mac osx or some form of it that would be able to use on any pc like how linux and windows is now
-
Sell money?
-
But not what the OP was talking about anyway. -
Doubt it.
They'd make more money there, but then they'd have to hire another army to support it.
No real gain there. -
Part of the reason Apple software works so well is the hardware platform is very tightly controlled. One thing I would like to see them do is license Dell and HP to make Apple computers but use the same chipsets, etc that OSX is written for. The only reason I would like to see this is so it wouldn't cost me so much. It's not in Apple's best interest because it would erode the value of Apple hardware.
Of course I would like to see them reinvent themselves as a software company because they do software so well. But once again that doesn't seem to be in Apple's best interest. At least it's not obvious.
On a similar topic, I'd like to see Microsoft put a *nix layer underneath windows. OS software really needs to standardize on a lower layer that handles the hardware, board support package, networking, etc and is stable and running smooth before the gui ever puts pixel one on the screen.
I'm glad Apple is still around. For a while there the jury was out as their market share spiraled down to single digits. Not only are they still around but gaining market share. And no they should not offer "outside" software like Windows for purchase with their hardware. It is only a slight inconvenience to get your own copy of windows to load on a mac. When I first converted fully over to Mac, I saw that sticky about running windows on OS X inside vmware or whatever and snickered. Now there is a distinct possibility I might decide to do it but I'm holding off as long as I can. If I get some version of Office up and running fully under Crossover, I won't bother. -
Tinderbox (UK) BAKED BEAN KING
Hi.
How many more people would buy an Mac Air, if it came with Windows.
If i had the money, i would buy one!

I didn't know Apple was selling money. Where can I buy some?
-
still wouldn't be worth the money -
I'll give you $250 for $500
I think it would be great if Apple were reinvented as a software company but, as to whether or not it's likely...... -
Steve Jobs mentioned Alan Kay's Cliché in his keynotes once:
People who are really serious about hardware should make their own software".
I will quit buying mac if apple ever turns to Windows, in reality apple will have to be shaken up by microsoft to have them take that route, Windows on mac is gonna be a deal breaker for me.
Of course the poster of this thread has little experience with Mac OS X otherwise there is little reason to install Windows on a mac, by apple's standards leopard is 5 years ahead of where Windows is now today, I totally buy that.
I'm a business man and leopard does more stuff for me that Windows never can, read the business week: http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/apr2008/tc20080410_206881.htm -
-
I'd accept a free copy of Windows along with Leopard.
Or maybe even a $50 discount for taking a dual booting system -
but as one of the commenters noted, as long as people still have to install windows on their own or hit ctrl+right arrow, why not just stick with windows?
i can certainly see apples continuing to increase in popularity (heck, I own one now) but I would be surprised if it spread to the business world
-
If they offered an option that said
O/S
Mac OSX
Mac OSX/Vista Ultimate
MANY would configure with windows pre installed dual boot....
If you think they wouldnt you need to be honest about it...sure Windows has issues, but EVERYTHING is WINDOWS and having BOTH pre installed would be great. -
Personally I think it would just devalue the greatness of a Macintosh having Windows preinstalled. -

IMO, any further association with MSFT is more of a negative than its worth. -
-
Interestingly, I had a friend bring over his Asus G1S last week and had a chance to play with it. I didn't know Asus put together machines for apple but they certainly have just about nothing in common. The screen, build quility, design etc...it was like comparing apples and oranges. It doesn't mean much, nor does it make any sense, saying that an Asus notebook is the same as a macbook merely because Asus put it together. -
Quality how? Thinkpads aren't as great now that they are made by Lenova. I've never been a fan of using those. And lol to Sony beating Apple in appeal and style. Oh wait... a thats subjective and completely worthless in any debate. -
BACK TO THE ASUS FORUMS FOR YOU -
no its true ASUS parts are used for Apple. Thats ridiculous to say that mac is more of a hardware company if your talking about computers. The reason why there doing so well was becuase of the ipod not because of their pcs. before the ipod was out there was speculation that mac would have to do some major cuts and sell out. Mac would do so well on regular pcs becuase people would be drawn in on the simplicity of mac and how it looks.
seriously why would i buy a mac most of them are with not up to date parts. I would not say outdated but nothing really great unless you would be paying a lot more then average.
Look at this mac pro
* Two 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Harpertown” processors
* 2GB memory (800MHz DDR2 fully-buffered DIMM ECC)
* ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics with 256MB memory
* 320GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s 7200-rpm hard drive1
* 16x double-layer SuperDrive
Thats without even 4gigs of ram or even a 8800.
They dont even have blueray on mac yet.
They want 2,800 this would cost me way cheaper from dell or gateway or ibuypower
This would cost me about 800 or less to build.
also looking at the new macbook pro holy sh8t so overpriced! iam sorry i would stick with the gateway p series or dell xps series
iam not a mac hater because i like there ipods and iphone must say ipod touch like the best hand held ever and they have some cool stuff. i am also impressed by there advertising actually one of the best companies for doing advertising. -
Yes, we know. Apple pricing is not for bottom feeders or home builders. This is why it took so long for me to come over completely. Part of the key was the availability of a form factor that seems appropriate to today's technology: the mac mini and the imac. Both of these represent the reasonable application of packaging. There are a few pc designs that are small but very few. I have been interested in Mac for many years now. I always liked the simplicity of the OS. It wasn't until they started bringing out the newer form factors, including that sphere with the floating monitor, that I started seriously looking.
Of course ipod bright Apple back from the brink. The reason it succeeded is because Apple's philosophy has always been a better approach: simpler and lighter versus heavier and more complex. It's a winning approach. What continues to drag Apple down is their approach to DRM and their pricing. If Apple were to offer OS-X for sale to install on any Intel hardware tomorrow, they would probably sell a billion copies in the first month. The problem is it would be the end of Apple as we know it. The support load of dealing with all that hardware diversity would make them look a lot more like M$ than the Apple we know and love today. -
-
the asus in his signature leads me to think no -
my god research it
-
Please offer help to the forum rather than showing the PC fanboi side of yourself. -
I just configured an M1530 as best I could trying to match part for part on Dell.ca and it came to $1739 CAD. And yes I priced it with Vista Ultimate as with OSX you get the full thing. The equivalent MBP is $1999 without any discounts. So it appears to be slightly over priced, far from the sensationalized "holy sh8t so overpriced!". However, the screen on the M1530 while having the same resolution, it doesn't mention LED backlighting.
Without going into the design elements, form and resale value that subjectively put the M1530 to shame, for the extra $260 you get LED-backlit screen (with the option for matte), multi-touch pad, light sensor, and the ability to run OSX and Windows. I wouldn't call that $260 money down the drain.
And gateway....are you serious? Why don't we start comparing Acers too while we're at it, which aren't that much of a lower-end manufacturer than Dell btw. -
Doesn't the Dell come with LED backlighting?
-
still angry about vista.. i like linux to lol...
i would buy leopard in a sec but all other OS they made are just plain horrible like tiger..
are us serious look at the gateway p laptop series
for 1300 i can get 1.83 an nvidia 8800 gt 17 inch screen 3 gig and vista and be playing crysis on high
for the dell thing i was thinking of the m1330
and btw vista ultimate is a waste so there is no point of buying it just get business or home premium
and all dells have back lighting thats the most dumbest thing i have ever heard.
and i think you should have not show your fan boy sides becuase i know you are a mac fan boy by your a mac logo as your avatir -
-
Before that I was a windows guy. Still am a little for certain things. I've been a beta tester for MSFT since 2002, mostly involved with Flight Sim 2004 and X, Office 2007 and Vista. I have 10 licences of Vista Ultimate, do you want one? -
. I do like Apple products, but they are not perfect in my eyes and I won't defend them unless I feel they should be defended. Your avatar should not equal whether you are a Mac fanboy or not.
And all notebook screens have backlighting, yes. But what he meant was LED-backlighting, which is relatively new in the industry. Most of the industry right now uses CCFL-backlighting, and Apple's MacBook Pro and MacBook Air are among the first to incorporate the new LED-backlighting. -
.
ooo i thought he was talking about like regular back lighting which has been around since like 2000 -
I never said, and certainly didn't mean to imply, that apple products are perfect. Now that would make me a "fan boy" had I said that.
I just don't think they're over priced. But then again, that may be a subjective term. -
Apple is overpriced, are you kidding? No one here should say they aren't when Dell is offering the same machine for a few hundred bucks less with a toss in 3 year warranty that we pay 350 bucks for.
That said, apple is one heck of a computer company, and I felt it was worth the extra cash for the product, support, and convenience of apple store near by. -
).
Yes, you can get a comparable Dell notebook for the price of a Mac notebook. But little extras found on Mac hardware obviously costs money to research, develop, patent and mass produce. The cost to make the casing of the MBP just that 0.2 inch thinner may have cost a ton.
Do you personally think it was worth it? Maybe, maybe not. That's where the difference between overpricing and being expensive is. It depends if the things they add are of value to you or not. -
-
I think its worth it, ofcourse, I made an informed buy. i guess overpriced isnt the word....expensive is more like it. Its a solid machine and I wouldn't do it any differently.
-
Montreal/Boston. Go Habs! -
If a consumer feels something is "overpriced" they won't buy. Now if you feel the item in question is "expensive" and still buy that would make more sense.
Everyone likes to buy something expensive even if they know there are cheaper alternatives (and that's fine) but to say something is "overpriced" and still buy that's contradicting. -
I bought it and I love it, but they are DEFINETLY high priced. I corrected myself in terms of my wording...its EXPENSIVE, perhaps not overpriced.
-
To get a similar mac, as a pc, would of cost me 1000 dollars more. Which basically Gives me the right to eat at fancy eateries alone on my macbook. Also mac should be slapped for grossly overcharging on their site for ram upgrades 500 percent mark up .... come on.
However Mac has a very stable system. But then again Im not really sure when the last time My computer became unstable out of no where, I find alot of my problems are self inflicted wounds, Always trying to a push an envelope getting that next little bit out of my computer.
I believe they have there place in this world, But a world of macintosh rather scares me, Its almost communism. There would be no intel or amd, or nvidia and ati not to mention countless other motherboard and chipset manufacturers. Then again in a perfect world, Windows would be open source and mac software would work on pcs and linux would be more user friendly -
-
IRT those people running only Windows on macs, I don't get it why don't you just buy a PC instead? I don't think apple telephone support will help you out if you question them about Windows problems.
Macs are very affordable from business perspective, even to shareholders and educational sector apple is known to offer discounts. -
A few years back I wanted to upgrade the RAM on an old Dell from 512 to 1GB but I had to use Rambus ram (remember those?). I called around some stores locally and got prices ranging from $200-$300. I then called Dell thinking that it would for sure be cheaper. To my amazement they wanted to charge me $600 for the same thing.
Like Sam said, all companies overcharge on things like that. That's where the money is for a lot of them.
There are certain things I would not buy direct from apple, RAM and applecare are just two examples.
Would Apple sell more money if they gave option of windows?
