I wouldn't say that Apple is expensive or overprice, before I got my MacBook, I ordered the new Dell Inspiron 1420 and all the things I had to pay extra for (Webcam, N Wi-Fi card, DVD-RW, etc) came standard on the MacBook.
The price also goes with the customer service, ever talked with the Dell customer service? Let's just say that they told me go to buy somewhere else.
And Applecare price is justified, prices are similar to other warranty.
-
-
But customer service for the most part is useless, when was the last time you knew of someone getting a computer degree for customer service, at the end of the day, they just follow protocols for the most part. While mac knows exactly what they are dealing with when someone phones, while the other guys have huge other issues and countless programs that could be causing problems and conflictions.
I love mac for showing the computer world, yes an almost problem free computing enviornment can be achieved, while on the flip side pc people are pushing the envelope of drivers and hardware on a daily basis. Im for free market and anti monopoly.
I can only imagine where the graphics would be today if the best company going voodoo didnt dissapear into thin air.
And i personally love the fact that macs are starting to rise from the ashes once again. The more market share you guys get, the more microsoft will get its act into gear and hopefully scrap vista and do it right the next time around. -
Apple wouldn't sign a deal with Microsoft. May be Microsoft will buy Apple in 2020.
-
Well wouldn't selling Macs with windows make them PC's
Anyway why would you buy a Mac with Windows when you could just by a ThinkPad -
oh no i didnt
-
-
-
Well we agree the MBP isn't what you should buy.
-
.
-
OOOPS MBP is brokded
But ThinkPad is still awesome
-
Of course, the Thinkpad has better build quality, but I find because of this, it severely lacks in its design. The MacBook Pro is a better balance between the two in my opinion.

Like buying a Hummer or BMW

Hey for all those who do not believe that Asus makes Apples Macintosh here you go
http://news.softpedia.com/news/New-Intel-Mac-Laptops-Will-Be-ODM-By-Quanta-and-Asustek-15586.shtml
It is made by Quanta, another ODM and Asus.
Edit:
Here is another link further supporting my so called "claim":
http://www.appleinsider.com/article...ok_makers_lead_odm_chip_spending_in_2006.html
See in the "PC" world we don't make claims we make notebooks!
Funny how Mac Fanboys find it an insult to realize their prized Mac's are actually normal computers...what sets apart Mac in the industry is their perfectly tailored OS. Going back to the argument. If Apple were to include Windows with their Mac's instead of OS X they would just become another PC. But now they hold a reputation because they take that extra step in working on a full system, including the OS. -
-
-
and soon mac will make you all drink the special punch, but seriously thats one little quirk with me, all the macs look the freakin same, I personally like the fact that I have yet to see another laptop that looks like mine around.
-
I really can't see the so called "prettiness" of a Mac. It looks like just another slate notebook to me.
No if Mac decided to come up with a brand new funky design that no one ever thought possible then people can call it pretty. Otherwise right now its just a very standard rectangular prisim. Atleast laptops like Sony have different styles in their lineups. Dell is honestly more or less the same, and the only noteboooks that are half decent are the XPS series.
Acer is garabage and bulky. Thinkpads are sweet and durable and I think they look alright. Asus laptops are stylish and come maybe second or third in the style market.
MAC's entire notebook lineup consists of the same big rectangle but either slightly thinner or alot huger!
And they call themselves original....
I think what it is is people buy the notebook because all of the hype and then teach themselves to consider it stylish, and amazing. The learning curve on Mac OS X is just as steep as the one on Windows. What makes OS X a better operating system. The fact that its tailored to its own hardware. Still it has its issues with programs and even with the computer it self.
Stop flaming Windows, because I bet every on in this forum has it installed. Seriously, I am not a personal Windows fan, but I want to see another company amass such a huge market share. I want to see another company come up with a multi-platform operating system thats just as functional.
I would only promote Mac OS on the market to drive down the Windows Price. And I really hope that another Operating system comes out soon.
Those Unix-like operating systems all suck. Linux is not an operating system but rather a kernel that developers use in packaging an operating system. I have not seen a complete linux distro able to compete excpet for maybe uBuntu, but they will eventually need to start charging if they want the quality of the product to improve and to get better market penetration. -

This thread is clearly nowhere near the original topic, and is quickly deteriorating. Your opinions have all been heard.
Thread closed.
**EDIT** The thread is open for posting again, but please keep to the topic. -
By the way, lighten up, guys.

I actually think Apple would lose market share if they allowed OS X to be installed on any machine. The biggest advantage OS X has over Windows (or Linux for that matter) is that it can be designed for specific hardware. If it were opened to the endless amount of hardware configurations that Windows and Linux are, it would have many of the same issues, negating OS X's biggest advantage. At that point, to the average consumer, it is just a different UI.
The iPod is the perfect example. iPod is not dominant because it is the best music player. It is dominant because when bundled with iTunes it offers the best user experience. If iPod were able to sync with any media player, it would lose its only real advantage. -
Hmm interesting point, but the reason multiplatform OS's exist is to allow a standard for software developers. Software is the key concern for a user purchasing a computer with a specific OS. Mac OS would gain a greater market share no doubt if they became an open platform. It allows people another option over Windows, gives incentive to Software developers to make applications for that OS and furthermore establishes a name in the market.
Users generally do not like to be restricted to a specific platform to use a product they like. The iPod does not fall under the same category as a computer. It is a much more delicate system. Music players do not need to have a standard and are not like mutlitasking computers. You buy the iPod for the iPod not what software it can run.
This concept of portability between OS's was originally established back in the days Unix dominated, but quickly dwindled when Windows took over the market. Now we are starting to see a reimergnece with the increasing popularity of Linux distros and Mac OS. -
-
-
More money with windows, yes.
-
Apple does not sell money, so giving the option of Windows does not have any affect on the selling of money.
(Boy we really like nailing this guy for his mistake don't we?) -
Lots of company (especially notebook companies) do not manufacture their own hardware. In Apples case their engineers develop specs for the hardware that Asus will build.
And yeah, I think Apple is way above many other notebooks. Specifically Sager (and other Clevo rebranders), Alienware and Dells. I've never seen one of those with even decent build quality. Dell's Inspiron line is terribly junky. OTOH I do think Dell's Lat line and other business notebooks are pretty top notch. The Lenova's are quality too, but I will never use one if I can help it. Trackpad is useless on those and I don't like the keyboard at all.
But seriously though, rafik... Your posts are so amusing. I've literally LOL'd at so much of what you said. Especially how other Unix-like OS's suck. And how they're not really an OS... yeah, thats funny! lol.
Keep this funny stuff coming! -
To be honest, it seems the only people really wanting OS X on non-Apple hardware are those who want to pay 'Dell' prices. They want to see the $299 junk desktop with OS X. -
Ubuntu FTW!
Btw, I DO care what OS(es) I am running. -
The momentum that all that carried was just too much for the competitors and so now we have a huge market share that's hard to dent. -
Every time I see this I LOL.
-
Haha, nice ATC
.
-
-
I like that one too ATC, thanks for posting that.
-
This is exactly what Linus said a few weeks ago. And honestly, working in IT, I could really care less who I bought from. In the end, it's all about performance. Will it work? Does it fit my specs? My specs include security, training and well, performance. Most people are very familiar with MSOffice, so training costs are minimal, making it a no brainer when choosing a productivity suite. When it comes to picking a PDA/Phone, Blackberry's integration with Microsoft Exchange and ESPECIALLY the ability to initiate a remote wipe were two specs that made choosing the Blackberry a no brainer. Laptops? Dell Latititude was again a no brainer. They are sturdy, aren't flashy or easily targetted for theft (a HUGE concern) and Dell also bundles in a top notch tech support package.
Form factor, LED backlighting, and flashy colors are great for the consumer market. When it comes to the professional world, Security, remote management, deployment, and integration become the catchwords. -
*What The French Toast -
And did you see the article on dig that claimed Ubuntu isn't Linux? I laughed
But in all seriousness... it cracks me up when I hear people talk about how they are major linux users and techies because they use Linux... yet they don't know a single thing about the CLI.
There are things that bug me about Ubuntu, but right now, it is one of the best Linux distros. -
I don't claim I'm a major Linux user or techie just because I use Linux (seriously, anyone could use Ubuntu), but I am generally referred to as a major techie when people hear that I use Linux, and I don't bother correcting them.
-
On top of that Synaptic package manager rocks. I know several non techies who use Ubuntu instead of windows now. Some people don't even notice the difference between it and windows! -
Lol i just looked at this again and it looks like I sparked some interest.
First off, kiddies, after hearing all your delightful jokes about selling money, let me edit it by saying "would apple sell more COMPUTERS"
Some people in this thread have said that they don't believe they are more well made than most PCs. I must say I misspoke (mistyped?) when i said they were more well made. Whether they are or not is besides the point, however I feel they look a hell of alot better than most PCs... And to the average computer buyer asthetics definately play a major role in purchasing a computer.
One of Apple's big mantras has been that they believe in choice. Now Im not trying to smash apple but if they believe in choice then why not lisence windows? It could potentially attract more buyers Apple's way, and lead to an increase in market share.
So thats my take. -
So why does Apple not sell computers with Windows preloaded? First, support. It would cost Apple millions in support because it is up to the OEM to support Windows, not MS. Second, the idea of Boot Camp is to help ease people into OS X. It is a safety blanket they hope you never have to use. Apple is in the business to sell OS X machines not Windows machines.
**EDIT** LOL! I just read through the thread! I did not mean to my original post here! Oh well, such is life. -
). Instead of being what the OP CLEARLY stated about asking why can't you buy Apples with Windows installed on it as well... It became, why doesn't Apple sell OS X for other machines.
-
Seriously when you say that you sound like your 12. -
Yeah it wasn't about putting OSX on other machines. It was working out some kind of deal with MS to get copies of windows and perhaps preloading them with bootcamp, or offering some kind of option with parallels or VMWare.
Would Apple sell more money if they gave option of windows?
