I ordered from the apple store and just checked the tracking number...it said my mbp just left Shanghai China ... LOL

uhh...ive seen the new mbp's in my local apple stores...apple could have saved some money if they would have just configured my computer in the US somewhere instead of halfway around the world.

do all orders from the apple store come from that far away? I sure hate to have it travelling that far...more chance to get knocked around :(

Apples are made by Asus, a Taiwanese company. It would cost Apple a lot more to configure your laptop in a US based factory.

As somebody who has had a few manufacturing jobs, and would face unemployment if I wasn't moving soon, I find that sad. :(

this has been the case for a very long time, anything you order from Apple will likely ship from there. No big deal.

My Sawtooth G4 was assembled in California, which I was very happy about

It's hard to say it's not a big deal though. I don't want to spawn out a huge political debate, but I come from Michigan, the US state with the highest unemployment rate right now. This isn't because we're lazy, but because every industry we've got is going overseas.

Here in Michigan, once upon a time we built TVs, mined almost all of the copper and iron in this country, and many other smaller industries that are gone completely. In recent years, we've lost 100,000 jobs in just the automotive industry alone, and an estimated 150,000+ jobs outside of that in various manufacturing.

Almost all of those manufacturing jobs are now in China.

Give it another 70 years, and Detroit will turn into a wildlife habitat.

Yeah, they're in China most of the time. Most products are assembled in China, Apple included.

Asus makes the Macbooks. Foxconn makes the MBP. And obviously, Apple already does whatever is cheapest for them. They're only designed in Cupertino. Everything else is made and put together in China, Taiwan, and Malaysia.

Yep, my MBP shipped out from China as well. All custom orders come from there now.

    And now, going off topic...

It's funny, but its true :(. I work as a software developer for the automotive industry and even our jobs are at great risk here in Michigan.

Wake up, man, Michigan is really poor. The American brand car is beat by the Japanese car.

The vast majority of laptops are assembled in either taiwan or china. The four or five major manufacturers of laptops that companies contract to build their machines are based out of taiwan/china. Whether or not it ships from taiwan or china it probably was there at some point in one form or another.

It's not so much that they get beat out in quality, because the big three (General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler for those not from the mid-west) build some excellent cars. They even have great warranties to back them.

The problem with the big three is that they use expensive union labour. It's the largest employer of high school dropouts that can pay $26 an hour in this country. Because it's union, the companies can't do anything about it.

So when a car buyer looks at the price, he'll see a $5000 higher price in a domestic car, and starts looking at the Japanese vehicles.

It has nothing to do with the Japanese building better cars, it's about price and media persuasion. As a guy working in the only engine machine shop left in Washtenaw county (Southeast Michigan), I can tell you honestly I do more work on Japanese engines than I do American ones. In my experience, they fail at a higher rate.

(I'd rather push my Cadillac or my Ford than ride shotgun in a Honda)

^Except for the fact that Japanese cars typically cost more than their American counterparts, and that Japanese cars consistently outscore their American counterparts in reviews and ratings from the majority of review magazines, going so far as prompting Consumer Reports to write a "WTF is going on with Japanese v. American Cars" article, I'd say you're right.
