Are you having this issue or just posting about it?

My old P4 Toshiba Satallite's palm rest area eventually became discolored to a dull, blackish color too. Looks like the extra $$$ for the a black Macbook might be worth it after all

wow i keep hereing of problems with Mac Books ??? are they slipping.
not a big mac fan boy my self but, i know they have are good reputation or atleast used too
what's with that ???
feeling sorry for the people with orange colored note books -
This sounds like another instance of "forum syndrome." Only the people with problems tend to blow it out of proportion on forums.

This is the first time I've heard this, it could be a major problem, we'll have to wait and see how many cases is having this problem. This is making hold off for a couple more weeks on buying one, and to think I was going to buy it this week.
-
It seems that it only happens on the Hotter MacBooks, this leads me to my theory....What happens to plastic when it gets hot? It turns a yellowish color. Hm, also, people with this problem, which IS farily widespread, can smell a strong smell of plastic when opening thier MacBooks. Could this be that the interior of the case is being burned by the heat? I think so.

Stop eating dorito's while on your macbook!

I feel like venting....lol
New computers are released ALL the time. I have never in my life heard of ones having this many problems....It seems like a MAJOR new problem is discovered almost on a daily basis. Come on Apple, PLEASE, get with the program. Is Steve sleeping or something? There is NO way possible that they could ignore this. I hate to say this but I honestly think people should think VERY hard before buying, myself included. I was ready to push the "Buy" button today, until I read this. Luckily the Apple Rep I chatted with told me it should be covered under warranty, which is good BUT this should, by absolutely NO means be happening. I used to think, well hey, this is a brand new product, but I've given up that speech. Now I'm wondering if they even test these things! And I'm sure I'm floating in the same boat as everybody else, I'm dying to buy one, but I'm a bit apprehensive as of yet. -
-
This is getting a little old. I don't really have any problems with mine, but I am wondering if it is just a ticking time bomb. I am still within my return period. It is tempting to take it back. I don't know what to do.

Let's take a break to gently remind ourselves that only disgruntled users post on forums. Happy users are too busy playing with their laptops to be whining about their investments.
-
I agree with that. If you notice, its the same people posting it on all the different forums, usually. But still, these problems should be fixed immediately.

Hm, It seems that the paint is not wearing off at all. It is just a stain. There is a way to remove it, Finger Nail Polich Remover. Now, this is said to work, several people have tried it on the Apple Support Forums. BUT I wouldn't try it just yet because I always thought acetone wasnt good for plastic. But at least we know that its just a stain from peoples hands. Yay!
-
I'd say it might be more then just a stain... -
You are posting on a forum.
I think you need to review your logic.
The point is that a community such as the notebookreview.com Apple forum should stand as a fairly good representive sample of macbook owners. Compare the number of people posting a problem with discoloration, to the total number of posters. This should point you in the direction of understanding the scope of the problem.
Anyway, it seems that the problem is now solved, so this is one issue we can cross off our list. -
-
hey, I found this site made by people having the discoloration problem with their MacBooks. There is only 38 people citing the problem, so hopefully it isn't a big issue.

Well, lets see here.
38 users out of the hundreds of thousand already sold, seems like its mostly just a bad batch that got through production, it happens people. When your in a production setting as soon as you find a defect in a product you backtrack it down the production line and get rid of it all, but since this is something that you can't really tell right away, naturally some will get through.
I just purchased a white macbook the other night, and went ahead and bought the new InvisibleShield for the Macbook, it should twart any discoloration issues if it does deem a bigger problem in the long run, and if it does it's most likely Apple will issue a recall, and then I can just tear off my invisibleshield send it in, and send the invisibleshield back in as well for a free replacement. -
-
xbandaidx can you link some info on " InvisibleShield" I have been looking for something like that, Ty ~Arman
-
http://www.shieldzone.com/category/laptops/
Scroll down a bit and there are MBPs and MBs shields down there. They basically come in two versions a Full entire laptop body shield or a partial one, I just got the partial one because that protects the top, the wrist area and trackpad, the full body has that but also the bottom of the laptop (um big deal?)
Its kinda somewhat pricey, but the deal is if something happens to the shield, you can send it back in for a replacement, and thats a lifetime thing. -
ty so much, it looks great and I will probably get one
The warranty is very nice LoL!

I was saying that I seen Macbooks are a local retailor that were perfectly fine. My macbook is fine. I'm got the invisibleshield for protection anyways. -
-
Well now it's 39 out of "hundreds of thousands"... but wait he used shieldzone as well -
I just got my shield today, gonna be putting it on in a bit.
I've been keeping an eye on my macbook, and its still going fine. I know of some people who had theirs for quite a while now with no problems yet. -
-
I'm pretty sure that the incident is isolated, there could be so many reasons for it, like its actually them that are causing it.
Update:: It appears the issue is being addressed now by Apple.
