Holy double post Batman!
EDIT: I was mistaken and my post has been changed. Please forgive. -
It's not an 8-core CPU though. "Just" two quad-cores. And if you count that sort of systems, 8- or 16 core systems are nothing new...
-
But on a workstation? It's still pretty new
-
It seems that the trend of Apple not announcing new computers continues. I wonder if this is the way it will be done from now on unless it is a big change.
-
To add to the brilliance, you can slot in four GeForce 7300s packed with 256mb RAM each.
-
I think so. Completely new models or major product updates will still warrant formal announcements, but things like new CPU configurations, etc. really just will happen.
I don't think this is that new; when Apple would do product refreshes, etc. in previous generations they didn't always have formal announcements either. -
the motherboard in the Mac Pro has been compatible with dual quad-core CPUs all along, you just had to swap them in. Nice to see Apple offering them as built-in. Guess we will see quad-core notebooks by next year.

8-core or quad-core. I guess that means 8 core = quad core. Companies like Dell have used quad core processors for at least a few months now. They are not cheap, but Dell does offer them. If Dell offers them, I am sure all other major desktop makers offer them or will very soon.
-
I saw 2006's conference when their hardware guy was announcing Xeon based Mac Pro's, You could see his tears of joy when he said about the problems they had getting rid of since switching to intel.
-
Nothing really new... we've known that the 8 core Mac Pro was inevitable ever since Anandtech tried dropping in a couple of quad-core Xeon engineering samples in a review machine last September.
If you want to see REAL processing power, take a look at the TyanPSC T-600... up to 40 cores in a box about the same size as a bar fridge. I'll take two please...
-
Yeah, even thought it's just two quad cores slapped together, it's still something new. If it was not Mac, it would get a big PR campaign...but I get the feeling that Apple feels strong and secure and they know their products high value.

If Apple is trying to impress me, they have failed.
-
I'm pretty sure they weren't trying to impress you. This was an expected addition to the CPU options on the Mac Pro.
-
Honestly I'd probably argue the opposite - traditionally Apple has been one of the few companies that is able to actually make an event out of product updates, etc. - especially completely new products. But even Apple can't make a real event out of simple CPU upgrade options (it's usually Apple users who end up generating a lot of hype and speculation about when Apple is finally going to add some new feature, etc. to their product line).
Yikes 8 CORES!
