is it just me or do you guys feel the same?
i never feel the "mouse experience" the same as under windows and much worse in comparison even when they are needed
-
-
i feel my mouse a bit more jumpy in mac os x compared to in windows.
-
what do you mean? My mouse works fine, if you are having problems download usb overdrive.
-
It depends on what you use. The apple mighty mouse was a waste of money because once that scroll ball gets durty its over and to attept to cleen it you need to break into the case...
If i use a wireless mouse with a usb plug it is as smooth as windows however when using the microsoft bluetooth notebook mouse 5000 the curser jerks slighty i adjusted the settings and that help a bit. -
yeah, im also using the bluetooth mouse 5000 and it is jumpy on OS X
-
-
i tried overdrive, steermouse
i have lachesis, logitech vx(driver available), v450, i also owned a BT mighty mouse before i return it
as the above had mentioned i also feel the cursor to be jumpier than windows environment, precision is lacking and "unfriendly"
it is like using two-finger scrolling on firefox rather than safari. -
all the pointing devices I've used are fantastic.... I had a MS mouse one time that was kinda clunky and jumpy feeling, but installing the software for it fixed that up... I got used to how OSX handles a mouse, how it moves, sort of exponentially, and I like it a lot better than Windows.
-
I have wireless mightymouse and it works terrible under OSX. It works much better on windows on the same macbook.. Don know why.
Tried usboverdrive and steermouse and they both suck. The precision is terrible and I just lost $70.. But I bought this back in 07 -
Usb overdrive was great with my Mx518. I'd get the mighty mouse, but it does not have enough buttons. I'm mad at myself for not picking up the MX Revolution at best buy when i saw it for $40.
-
Yes I am in the same situation. I am using the G5 logitech mouse and it is jumpy when using with OS X. I am just trying to set the OPI to highest so that it moves fast enough to reduce the feeling of jumpy......
-
I don't suffer from the jumpiness, but I get a kind of 'drag' feeling when using either of two different mice. It's uncomfortable, and not as precise as using the same mice with a PC.
I set up a thread about it here:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1952157&tstart=0
Using the mouse feels harder on my wrists than using the same mouse with my PC. Maybe this is just a laptop issue and caused by trackpad settings.
It would be good to be able to disable this effect and get the same response as using my pc. -
I've just spoken to Apple support and my issue seems to be caused by the trackpad, which causes differences in the distance the pointer travels across the screen in relation to the speed you move your finger on the pad, or mouse on your desk.
She said using an Apple mouse wouldn't make a difference, and this doesn't happen with desktop machines.
So I guess the question is can I put up with this, and if I send it back and get a PC laptop instead will I have the same problem? -
Just checked on a PC laptop and there isn't a problem.
Just called Apple and have asked for a return code. -
Macs have sketchy mouse acceleration. Hopefully this will be addressed in Snow Leopard. My mouse feels better in linux than OS X.
-
i had bt might mouse before i sold it for the same reason -
The mousepad works better in osx than. on windows it sucks.
-
I've just tried out all the options I can find - iMousefix, Steermouse etc etc and none of them has made any difference with the utter hideousness of using a mouse with my MBP so it is definitely 100% going back to Apple.
It's absolutely ridiculous that you can't switch mouse acceleration off on a machine of this price.
Shame on you Apple. -

The little file posted by ValkyrieLenneth actually solved my mouse problem. I downloaded it, and ran it once. My mouse behaves normal now, just like how it is on Windows. I have a G5 logitech mouse which has 3 OPI levels on the mouse itself. So I set the OPI to highest level, and use the file above once. I think either the problem resolved or I just get used to the mouse in OSX, I just don't have any odd feeling when using my mouse now.
So there is solution, or there are even more solutions to the problem. I feel sorry for you, and I really think it sucks to return the macbook. But anyway, you returned it already, weren't you? Things already happened. -
I'm waiting for the couriers to phone back with a collection time, so I'm still trying to find fixes.
Thanks for the link - I've tried that, and it's the only one that actually makes a difference. Unfortunately it kept switching itself off, so I had to switch it back on again. Even with it on though, the pointer movement was still not as good as with a PC - it still felt like I was wading through treacle. Plus I got fed up with having to switch it on every time I used the mouse.
It just seems a bit sad that I have to resort to using something like this on a high end laptop with a supposedly superior OS.
It's just really naff and unprofessional. -
I set the mouse acceleration just above the minimum setting (since at the minimum it is unusable!) and it looks a little bit better (less jumy than when setting the acceleration level at mid stroke).
Did you try, by chance, the intellipoint 6.3? I read somewhere on the web that it seems fixing the 5000 mouse behaviour. Iwill try it.
Thanks -
I know what youre saying. I have the Lachesis and when I use it on mac it is more jumpy or something, smoother on windows. Ive used wireless ones too, and they act the same way...

I got a Rocketfish Bluetooth Laser Mouth recently and so far it has worked great.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...bluetooth+mouse&type=product&id=1205537714540
No complaints so far. -
-
My problem is not the jumpyness. Its the late response. My MM wireless responds way better on windows. No software has helped fix this. So I gotta stick to my expensive $70 mouse which was such a waste. I wish i got a logiteck wireless for like $60
-
I notice the same thing. All the wireless mice I've tried on OSX have a bit of jumpiness to them at random times. It's like the mouse falls behind or the computer is too busy to process it at times. Under Windows the same mice are fine. It's not just the difference in the mouse acceleration curves. It's something else that I haven't been able to track down yet.
-
i give up looking for answer, the -1 trick works for me and i am settled in a compromise way although this render my wireless mouse useless (800dpi).
-
I think the best way is to get like a logitech mouse
-
i have the 2 useless logitech mouse sitting next to me, they both suffer in the lag/jumpiness even with driver installed
one is vx, another is 450 or something, the BT look but uses RF -
You folks got the Mighty Mouse. That thing is awesome!
-
giving credit where it is due though, i liked the scroll ball
this guy spoke my mind:
http://nathanbowers.com/design/mighty-mouse-doesnt-save-the-day-diagram-of-my-budget-kvm-solution/
the bad is pretty much the exactly what i felt -
Cheers -
it is because of the acceleration os/x gives after a certain speed of movement to cause that jumpiness
-
so this makes me think that you experience this behaviour exactly as I do...don't you?
Thanks -
defaults write .GlobalPreferences com.apple.mouse.scaling -1
this is what i use for stopping the acceleration
beware: if your mouse only has 800dpi you might need another desk just for mouse movement; on my 1440x900 screen i have to set it at 4000dpi to move normally -
I just got the DeathAdder from Razer. The blue one, installed the Mac drivers from the white one, and it works like a charm.
After a couple of minutes of fiddling with the software, I love how this mouse performs.
Granted, I don't have Windows anymore, but on OS X, this is the best mouse I've owned so far. -
The acceleration is not a problem for me. Its the precision. It is way more precise on windows. I think you guys have the same problem but think its the acceleration..
-
My cursor moves slower when using a mouse. I tried a gigabyte and a Microsoft mouse and they both had the same issues.
-
My experience from last year was that the Mighty Mouse worked great on the Mac OS X but felt weird on Windows. My G5 gaming mouse was the opposite - fantastic on Windows XP, crap and near unusable on OS X.
After that, and also because of the gestures, I started using the trackpad more and more. And now with the new unibody MBP, the trackpad can't be beat. 2, 3 and 4 finger gestures, and so on, it's a lot better than a mouse, except for gaming (which I didn't do on this laptop so far, lack of time).
I am pretty sure it's a driver / hardware issue. Somehow mouse is handled differently on Windows vs Mac. So your only choice right now is the MM, which also isn't everyone's thing. I loved the scroll ball which is just about perfect, but hated the right click where you have to let go of the left button in order to register a right click. That was the dealbreaker for me. The squeeze action is also impossibly hard but then again, you don't have to use it. -
Thanks -
Yeah, I think I need to set my speed to higher or something.
For some reason while using the Razer Lachesis it skips everywhere while in a game like starcraft or warcraft iii. But when I go back to the desktop, its fine and doesnt skip everywhere.
But then again the reason it skips more in these games is because its at a smaller res. It got really bad last night and just decided to go to sleep, but Im going to try and see whats up with it tonight. Messing with the speed or something.
Also I dont have the drivers for the mouse on my mac. Could be something with that too, duno. -
open terminal and just type down everything i had there you quoted
for lachesis and mac, just have the maximum dpi at 4000, it will be nice (hint, get a windows driver, use it on windows, save the profile(1 to 5), and use that on mac -
-
Higher quality mice suck on OSX because the mice have better, higher resolution sensors. The mouse acceleration is too high for these mice and disrupts the tracking by the sensor. On lower quality mice like the Mighty Mouse, this acceleration is not as big a problem.
Gamers and CAD-ers like zero acceleration. Moving the mouse 1 cm will move the cursor the same distance consistently. -
@ hydrocianic: sorry for the additional questions but
- shall I write all of this (i.e. with defaults write included?) ?
"defaults write.GlobalPreferences com.apple.mouse.scaling -1"
- what is the default value for this acceleration (just to know it in case of I would like to come back on my change)
Cheers -
everything will change back to normal when you adjust the mouse speed under system preferences.
to califf:
my logitech mice w/ 800dpi performs in similar manner to the 1600dpi BT MM(i've heard that is the new revision) with those distasteful and distracting acceleration though. which was why i refund the mouse after 2days
and for some reason the logitech driver doesn't recognize my mice anymore so i didn't bother with them at all. -
Indeed I tried it and I feel the mouse a little bit jumpy yet, i.e. I can still see that there are some bumps of acceleration now and then....
Thanks again for your patience on that
Ciao -
Mine is fine but I don't use mighty mouse (it's junk). I plug in a microsoft tracball mouse (oh the irony) into my macbook pro and it works beautifully.
apple and mice don't get along?
