I have a video in avi format, and I have a mac. What do I need in order to watch it? My MBP is saying its not a format Quicktime recognizes.

While VLC Player is pretty good I have used that and another program called MPCstar which is virtually the same thing and has a lot cleaner UI.

What are the benefits of using the standalone vlc player over quicktime with the perian plugin?

I have no experience with OSX but both my favourite programs are available for it.

You got VLC for media playback on whatever file you got, and it wont clutter do cluttered codec installs.
The other one is XBMC Media Player, i really enjoy that one too. :D
