im most likely getting a macbook, with a native res of 1280 by 800, but if i get an external desktop monitor with a way higher monitor, can the macbook make use of that, or will it just be restricted to its own res, which will make all icons on my new monitor look HUGE?

The MacBook is capable of using 1600x1200 in VGA and slightly higher in DVI so you should be able to get a nice 19-24" Monitor that will be supported nicely. Just make sure the monitors native resolution is specificly supported by the MacBook driver (I know 1280x800, 1024x768, 1280x1024 and 1600x1200 are but not sure what others)

According to the tech specs from Apple, the Macbook can drive an external display at up to WUXGA (1920x1200) resolution, although this is slightly outside the maximum resolution for single link DVI, which is 1920x1080... strange.

I think a spec must be listed wrong somewhere, since 1920x1200 is a standard 16:10 resolution for PCs, and in fact the one I'm using now.

I'd suggest a MBP if you want to use the 30" ACD
can a laptop take advantage of large external monitor?
