Well, most likely the free shipping only applies to the US (or rather to a continental US adress), and being in the UK you will most likely be charged import duty and then a VAT, which will bring the total to around 1300 pounds if not more!

Right, it would not be free shipping outside of the continental US.
And as ithicandos also stated, you will have to pay VAT.
Due to export control, you also may not be able to order it from apples US site.

Luke, I thought about the same when buying my MBP but the difference in prices is small when you consider all additional costs mentioned by ithcandos and hollownail. If you want to save a few pounds, try to find some refurbished units on the Online Apple Store.

From what I have heard from those who have owned refurb Macs, they say the conditions are awesome, some say you can't tell they're refurb other than the packaging.

Well, refurbs are packaged in brown cardboard boxes, none of the fancy Apple packaging found on new models.

Refrubs are, as the name suggests, refurbished models which were either on display or returned by customers who did not want them. The reason why there are no 15" models available would mean that Apple currently do not have any 15" display models they want to sell off, and no one has returned one which Apple can sell off.
