Doubtful. I'm sure the Mac would just recognize it as an iPod right off the bat, seeing as how it and iTunes are pretty integrated into OS X.

Yes you can, just go into itunes and set whatever space you want for time machine as space for 'disk use' or whatever is called, itunes will partition your ipod's hdd so that you can put files in it, so when you connect it to your mac, it will be recognized as an external drive, and therefore be able to use it with time machine.

it would be a huge miss on apples part if they didnt make the ipod 80gb "Time machine" compatible.

after all, it does have external disk use.

that is a brilliant idea for my very aged iPod Mini. Its at least 5 years old now... but still in decent shape. Granted, my iPod Mini only has a whopping 4 GB of space but it should still suffice. Can't wait to try this one at home.

Enable disk mode in iTunes and bam you can use time machine on it. But make sure you got alot of room for it. Time Machine should tell you how much it needs to backup all your info.

nah. if you do that, TM will re-format the whole ipod. what you need to do is partition it. i think somebody might have already said that…

Well, someone please tell me if it's working for them. I have never been able to get my 60GB 5th Gen iPod to be recognized through TM. It appears on my desktop and I can drag and drop files to it, I set up iTunes to enable disk use and TM doesn't see my iPod in TM Preferences.

Yeah, same here. I enable disk use and get the icon on my desktop, but time machine won't recognize it.

    how is an iPod formatted?

you may have to try manually partitioning it.

but even then 160gb may not be enough room depending on the size of your internal drive quite honestly.

I don't think the future is using an iPod for time machine, i think the future is being able to go home and have everything automatically back up wirelessly to a much larger more reliable HDD.

iPod HDD's aren't exactly known for their reliability.
