my hd on my core duo macbook will not mount. i tried reinstalling mac os, but i'm borrowing someone's "new" macbook disk, which from what ive read is incompatible. I took it to the apple store and they wanted to charge me 500 bucks to put in a new disk.

anything i can do short of buying a new tiger retail disk or buying a new macbook?

You can buy new hard drives for like $100-120 online. Why pay $500?

Anyway, is the hard drive you have physically dead? Do you hear it spin up when you boot?

Why are they charging you that much? Are you no longer under warranty?

The hard drive swap on a macbook is very easy to do, and like greg suggested you could save yourself alot of money doing the upgrade yourself.
As for the dvd re-install, any reason you don't have the copy that came with the computer?
However if you must use your friends then a quick google will find a well documented solution for "making" your friends install disc into a normal install disk.... but you didn't hear that from me.
