macbook pro
the basic is 1999 and the next one up is 2599, a 600 difference
is the 0.2ghz, 128mb video ram, 40gb hd increase worth $600? are there other extra features that i am not aware of? because with $600, i can possibly get 4gb ram and a 7200rpm hd

If you don't need the extra VRAM, I'd say its not necessary to get the 2.4 GHz version MBP. Just get the 2.2 GHz, and as you said, get 4 GB RAM.
-
The stock configurations for the MBP are priced as follows:
2.2GHz 15" = US$1,999.
2.4GHz 15" = US$2,499. -
Your link redirect me to the refurbished MBP, which costs $2200, has 256 MiB VRAM and 2,4 GHz. I'd get this one and add RAM on my own. I don't see any possible reason for paying $700 for extra 4GiB...

what exactly does more vram do? -
Better graphics in the NEWEST of games. If you're not playing really new stuff then you wont notice it. I'm a generation older with the lower model MBP and I can still play HL 2 with almost everything maxed. So really, you don't need it at all(imo).
Also, be sure to buy the ram yourself from newegg.com and install it after you get the computer. It's much cheaper this way.
