if i partition my main drive with DU in leopard will it just resize the drive or will it erase everything?

yes it seems as if it may be possible under certain circumstances.
click on the help (?) button in the bottom left of the Disk Utility window when you are in the partition tab on your main startup disk and it looks like it will give you all the info you need. -

Yes, you can non-destructively resize partitions with Disk Utility. This was actually a feature introduced in Tiger. However, with Tiger you had to use commands in Terminal; now with Leopard this feature has been incorporated into the GUI. Although, in your case, it's useless. Boot Camp is only compatible with two partitions... unless you're sneaky!
And even if you are sneaky enough, resizing partitions when Boot Camp is involved will likely corrupt the drive (more than likely you will not be able to boot into your Boot Camp partition).
