But FYI, I use a Glossy screen. I like it better cause of the color saturation and i'ts brightness. I do a lot of coding and it's a bit easier on the eyes. It may not be better for graphic design (which I do), but since I'm not pro, the slight difference in color won't really effect me.
I like glossy
matte's for my desktop

Glossy is one of those things I thought I would hate, but after spending time with both matte and glossy displays in the store, I realized I actually preferred glossy.
The thing with glossy is that it's not just shinier -- the surface diffraction layer is removed, so the light reaches your eyes more directly, and there's no surface "grain" that you get with a matte screen. I find this reduces eyestrain, and the lack of grain is so uncanny sometimes with photographs, it's like you're looking directly in to a real scene. On the other hand, the tradeoff is in certain cases you get reflections. But those aren't as bad as people make them out to be (at least with Apple displays), and I find it a worthwhile tradeoff. I use my computer in a variety of places, and the only place where I notice the reflection is when I'm in my living room, have my living room lights off, but the kitchen light on and behind me. Otherwise, everywhere else, it's not distracting. -
Right, I can say that I use my mac in several places too. I only get bad glare with sunlight. Maybe a direct incadescent or halogen light might cause problems, but otherwise, glare isn't a big problem.
And yeah, the lack of the "grininess" is a big boon.
Thanks for pointing out the fact that the difference between glossy and matte isn't just a coating. It's a different type of display technology. I always forget to mention that when people ask. -
It is really a personal preference and you should really go check some out. It doesn't have to be a Mac to notice the differences,
-
hmm interesting, i talked to a mac sales rep and he told me most people choose matte over the glossy.
-
Probably because it is the default option. Also, most consumer-oriented types buy the MacBook and those that buy the Pro are more pro/enthusiast oriented, and they seem to prefer the old matte. Like me, I hate glossy.

I've actually been told that it is indeed easier on the eyes and that opmetrist doctors (sorry dunno how to spell it) recommend glossy over matte because of that, basically its said that matte causes much more strain on the eyes as well causes the person to 'glare' AT the screen (notice i'm not talking about screen glare, totally different thing) which is also bad for your eyes. Just lately I went in for an eye checkup and been told I need glasses now because I'm becoming a little farsighted, he said he feels that I could contribute most probably to genes, however he said that he feels because I'm a big computer user it definitely played a part as well.
I don't have the MBP, but the MB and I prefer the glossy and yes it is easier on my eyes, and when I do get a reflection even know they are barely noticeable, a simple adjustment of the LCD screen and it goes away. -
Yeah, it's definently much better on the eyes!
Perfect if you work with documents or code a lot. Like I do. -
I like my hybrid matte/glossy PC monitor... it rules
Oh and when I buy a mbp, i'll pick glossy because i mean let's face it... nobody spends more time outside than inside with the laptop. -
I have a glossy screen and love it -
i had a sony 160 with a glossy screen and just got the new mbp core 2 with the matte and in the end i find the matte better. first it is easily as bright as the sony and the shiny screens show off all kinds of dirt smudges etc. i actually find i can use the mac at a much lower backlight level then the 160. i'm sure it is all personal
-
The glossy screen on the MBP is easily usable on the lowest brightnes setting (one box in the brightness setting). I often use it with the lowest brightness, then forget that it's low and get surprsied by how bright i is when i put it at the highest level.
Yeah, it does show SOME smudges more than a matte screen. But that just comse down to keeping a screen clean. -
I'm saving up for a MBP and I'm pulling my hair deciding between mate or glossy. I will be playing games with bootcamp so which of the two screens would be better?
-
well i finally go the glossy, and so far no regrets. After years of using matte lcd monitor, i think glossy is far better. Hardly notice any reflections at all.
-
Wish I had money for the MPB but I wouldn't mind either. I'd just place a BestSkinsEver full body skin over it and it'd look 'glossy'
do you have matte or glossy: POLL
