I know that OSX comes with its own email program, but can I use hotmail with it to read my mail, or is there only a few that work with it

I do know it works with Gmail, I'm intrigued if it will pick up Hotmail. I'm going to try it out now...

    Hold ups!

Free Hotmail does not use POP3, that's why Apple Mail will not be able to work with it. Nor will Hotmail work with any other mail program on OS X or Windows.

You can access your Hotmail from a web browser just as you did in Windows. If you want to use the Apple Mail program, use an email service that uses POP3, IMAP or Exchange. GMail is a web-based email service that can also be configured with POP3, so you may want to consider that.

I was going to post as I did below, but then found this..
plugin for Hotmail, to Apple Mail
oh, and please let us know if you're successful

I guess you can disregard this if the above link works for you:
I remember seeing some one post.. you need to "buy" hotmail to unlock features, such as forwarding. The free account is limited

I tried to use Mail's tools to add my hotmail account to it, but no dice. Tomorrow I'll give that plugin a try, Jimy. Thanks!

Ya, hotmail uses a proprietary system for their mail, meaning no Imap, or Pop3. That's why it's impossible to connect with normal means. I'm really surprised I found that plugin honestly, but it just fell in my lap.

I used this plugin to get Hotmail going with Mail.app. It works as advertised.

If you want to get your Hotmail with Mail, this is your only option.

Curious, when did hotmail go to a proprietary system? I mean, I hate hotmail, and pretty much stopped using it for anything but spam, but I've used it in outlook years ago.
Is this a recent change since they moved over to whatever they're trying to call hotmail now?

It has been for as long as I can remember. It's a royal pain in the ass to deal with. While everyone else is using simple solutions, like IMAP and POP, Hotmail uses their own system.

It's not supported by anyone. Microsoft doesn't even support it with their Windows Mail client. Lame.

There are many 3rd party software on the Windows side that let you POP3 to Hotmail though - or at least there were back when I was still using hotmail. Eventually though, they all started charging for their software as well :p

Yes and no. Out of the box, that is correct. But Windows Mail sucks just as much as Apple Mail, I can't stand either.

However, Microsoft offers a better alternative that's still in beta, called Windows Live Mail. It's much much better than the crappy rebadged Outlook Express, and lets you access your Hotmail account.
