i moved a 80gb virtualbox image file into the trash can, and it's taking forever to get it deleted...my laptop ran overnight(fall asleep at 2:30am), when i woke up at 7 something, it's still running.......i think i've figured a way to remove/delete it quicker.
1. move an 80gb file from partition(mac)-to-partition(FAT32), should take around 20 mins
2. go into vm(win7) and access the FAT32 partition, delete through windows... i think that would speed things up..
what do you think?

Do you have secure erase turned on? If so, that's why it's taking so long.

try opening terminal and executing the command
rm -rf ~/.Trash/* -

Well given the context of this thread, I thought it would be clear that it has something to do with emptying trash.
If you want an English translation of the command, it would look something like
"Remove all files in Trash, including folders that may be full and don't stop and ask me for confirmation" -

Thank you... Chris & Khris for the information on the command.
I have a question though. Does the issuance of the command empty the trash in a manner consistent with the existing empty secure/unsecure setting, or does it over-ride the setting to empty it in one particular way or the other? -
OS X is built on top of unix and rm is just a very basic Unix command (delete). I'm pretty sure your secure delete setting you set in OS X won't have any effect on the behavior of rm. I'd think it would do just a regular delete.

lol...80gb of a single file for ? i wish.... it was a vm file from virtualbox, i allocated that much for the installation.
anyways, thanks for all the suggestions, i did it through terminal, and it took less than 2 sec to clear out from trash bin, and i have also removed the secure delete option........ -
is there a simple unix command to remove these guys. lol -
Global Thermonuclear War?
