I bought one of these for my mac , it fits in the slot fine and you have to push it in until it clicks and is flush with the mac, but when i insert a flash memory card and pull the card out it pulls the entire reader out as well.

Now normally to remove the expresscard reader you press it in until it clicks and is spring loaded and pops out so you can remove it.

But why when i remove a snug fitting memory card is the entire reader pulling out , unless i use one hand to keep the reader in place as i use the other hand to pull out the memory card , is this normal?????

Is it just a matter of waiting for the cards to become looser with wear.

Examples below, mine is second from the bottom.

I believe it was designed that way I'm afraid. I use an eSATA ExpressCard for my eSATA drives with my MacBook, and everytime I disconnect or reconnect drives, I have to be ultra careful not to push or pull too hard. I've had issues before where I get the black screen prompting shutdown in OS X accidentally pulling out the ExpressCard slot while transferring files. I find myself holding the card now and carefulling plugging/unplugging my cables. I'm sure that's the same case with your SD Media reader.

ExpressCard was redesigned for easier device removal(too easy) and lower cost manufacturing compared to the older PCMCIA slot that required a cumbersome plastic button mechanism that ejects the card.

I can read photo`s from my camera cards but not delete them , even disk utility cannot wipe the cards, but the expresscard specifications say it is read/write , It does not mention mac`s thought just Xp,Vista

You might want to check the manufacturer of the reader and check for a latest OS X driver.

What might be happening is the File system, could it be that the SD card you are using is formated under NTFS? That would explain the inability to delete or format it since NTFS is read only under OS X defaultly.

The 8gb SD card is formatted as FAT32 , see usb device info below.

I have a 2gb, 4gb, and 8gb and none of them will write but read fine, and the expresscard does not work at all in Xp bootcamp.
