Hey guys, was thinking about purchasing a macbook pro (hopefully 2.4Ghz). I was wondering if I will be able to play any game coming out in the future on playable settings (for at least the next 2 years)? If not then I might save $500 and go for the 2.2Ghz model if the 256MB 8600 won't help me much.

The 8600GT will be fine for a while - though 3 years is a LONG time in technlogy standards. The 8600GT will play current games at high settings, though with Crysis and various other DX10 games coming out, they'll slowly drop to mid-high settings.

My Alienware still runs modern games like FEAR, C&C3, HL2: Lost Coast, Supreme Commander, etc at its native 1680x1050 at medium settings. FEAR actually runs at medium-high. I get about 1333 in 3D Mark06. That Alienware is almost 2 and a half years old. Its in my sig below.

That being said, I think the MBP will run games fairly well up into mid 2009 (2 years). At that point in time their is a supposed rapid shift in fundamental computer architecture with the "Fusion" idea coming out, so I can't say much beyond 2009. Still, I'd bet you can play games well into 2010, at least a low-mid settings.

It would be tough for any 15" notebook with a mid-range video card to play new games in 3 years. It will play them and they should for the most part be acceptable, but you will probably run across some that won't play.
