i used mac the ripper but forgot i'd need to convert it (doh). any good (free) recomendations?

since I am sure you are not ripping Copyright DVD's and distributing the files. . . you can actually just use VLC player to play back RAW DVD files. You can actually just copy the VIDEO TS (most likely, depending on how the DVD is encoded) and open it with VLC, just drag the VIDEO TS folder onto VLC in your dock and it will start up just like if you put the DVD in the drive.
I believe doing this even with Copyright DVD's is legal, as long as it is just for personal use, and you aren't distributing it to anyone else. Don't quote me on that however. but if you have a nice large external HDD this is a great way to keep a backup of a DVD. -

actually i need something that i can use to convert it to mpeg4 or something similar so i can watch it on my ipod.
