    Hi,
I want to see if I like OS X before I spend $1000+ on one.
So, I've decided on an iBook G4 from ebay & I'm wondering how much to bid.
    Link
    Thanks,
    Thomas

with a MacBook going for about $1000 brand new,

I would think $600 would be the highest I would go, but you just have to decide what its worth to you.

I think it would make more sense to just buy a new machine, and sell it at a slight loss if you find you do not like it.

Thing is I can't afford a new system.
Since it has a dead touch pad(no problem for me) I think the price will be lower.

$600 could buy you a brand new Windows laptop that runs everything you want to except for OS X. Think about what you're doing. I agree with the advice that you'd be better off saving for a used/refurbished/new Macbook, instead of investing in obsolete technology.

I personally would recommend you get a Titanium Powerbook instead of that iBook, as a Titanium Powerbook beats an iBook both in terms of looks and build quality.
That said, I would not pay more than £300 (~$600 direct convertion, $500 real life convertion), as it has no touchpad, no warranty and is very outdated.

    Actually, I prefer the iBook's look :D
I just wanted to know the worth,
    I didn't want advice.

Are there any comperables on eBay? Take a look at what they've sold for in the last 30 days. Then, decide how much you really want it. Is it a luxury (bid less), or a necessity (bid a little more)? Nothing wrong with wanting what you want, regardless of the technological soundness. I have a seven year old VAIO Picturebook I only keep because it's so darn easy to take places.

Reply to me... It looks like live ones have been selling for less than $600. A defective one should be had for less than $500. Dead ones are in the $200-$300 range. - Roger

oh, I'm sorry, I actually didn't see that you had a link posted, I thought you were just talking in general.

If it were me, I think I would start at around $400, and go up from there if necessary, I definitely wouldn't go over $500 though.

Why not get a used core duo macbook? Should be cheap these days.

The most I would pay for that iBook is US$0.00. Save your money and go play with Intel Macs at the <noparse>Apple</noparse> Store. Then buy one. ;)
