My buddy who works at Amazon part time emailed me to say that Amazon is overloaded with Kindle returns take a look who would buy this??

When an iPad is the same and does soo much more.
Kindle is 100% dead anyone disagree??
-
Uh, kindle is an e-reader,very niche market, uses e-ink technology so the display doesn't flicker and is easy on your eyes. Has 3g to download a huge assortment of books. The iPad is a giant iPod touch with access to the itunes store, they don't really compete.
-
Yeah I agree with Xhibit. You either want e-ink or you don't. This is easier on the eyes for prolonged reading than an LCD screen. If you don't, then yes, you can get a lot more out of Apple's tablet.
I think the iPad will have much broader appeal than the Kindle. I also think the Kindle DX is overpriced. But... the regular Kindle is about half the price of an iPad, and includes 3G for downloading e-books/magazines without any separate monthly fee. So... I wouldn't call the Kindle dead. But I do think iPad will be much more popular.
Of course, Amazon will continue to improve the Kindle I'm sure... -
But aren't many people seeing the iPad as a competitor to the Kindle? So with the Kindle being half the price, and the better screen (no eye strain), I think it'll do just fine.
-
That is so nieve who in their right mind would want a Kindle DX now. Alot of people who purchased a Kindle DX in the last week will be returning them not all but alot.
-
Who in their right mind would've ever wanted a Kindle DX at its current price? I told you, the DX is overpriced and always has been... and I'm sure if they don't sell then Amazon will lower the price. The regular Kindle is a reasonable price though.
-
Kindle, especially its $400 version, will definitely feel the pressure from Apple Ipad since the the Kindle is a pure reading machine.

I would definitely prefer the iPad to the kindle dx, but honestly i have no patience for either device.
The form factor is just too awkward.
I am either sitting down to do serious work (laptop, which is not really much bigger, folded, than a kindle or iPad, so isn't harder to transport) or I am busting out the iPhone to check my email or get a random tidbit from the internets.
how does the tablet fit into that situation? i don't know. -
Kindle dx wins on battery life by a lot
-
The Kindle battery life is much better. Some people will also like the mini keyboard. Also, this is a 3G model and is $489. The iPad 3G model will be about $800-$900 I think so that is a big difference there. So whilst it has may be better features it also demands a much higher price. I never realised before that the Kindle came with 3G.
I think this is good competition for devices like the Vaio P also. -
people comparing these two devices clearly don't do extensive reading or have never used an e-ink machine.
e-ink is so much better it's laughable to compare to an active backlit LCD display. I have a hard time believing anyone would try to read an entire book on any LCD display. if they do, I have to believe it's because they just don't know any better.
also, remember: the Kindle is not "niche"; it was Amazon's best selling product this holiday season by far. it doesn't have the mass marketing engine that Apple has, nor the legions of non-tech people ready to shell out the bucks...but it does have a superior reading device. anyone deciding between these 2 devices should weigh how big a role READING will play for them vs. web browsing or some such. if their primary motivation for buying an iPad is for book reading, they need to buy a Kindle, Nook, or other eReader with an eInk screen.
period.
iPad + long sessions of reading = iStrain. -
EXACTLY. I don't see the iPad as an ebook reader killer, since the iPad reading experience will never have the book-like quality of e-ink.
That being said, the iPad has an advantage with magazines and periodicals. Just check out this video. Imagine the iPad with that kind of interface for magazines.
'Twould be awesome, and I hope both Apple and magazines publishers realize the potential. -
the iPad starts at $499, $599, $699 add $130 for 3G.
Yeah the kindle has a really great battery life. That's great if you don't have a house and never sleep at night.
I agree that you can't directly compare the kindle and the iPad, but if someone is look at a kindle DX and see's the iPad for not that much more, I think there will be a better chance for them to go with that. -
King of Interns Simply a laptop enthusiast
It is a magazine sized itouch lol. I don't see this product taking off except with the cult followers of everything apple. The only thing going for it is the reader which seems to be inferior to the kindle anyway but then again I would still prefer reading a real book. I wonder how many people read for hours because if they do they would realise a real book will always be better than a screen. The price is definitely extortionate for what it does.
Now apples laptop's are another matter I still own a 6 year old ibook g4 and it works perfectly and never has crashed. -
Apart from the obvious E-ink advantage of the Kindle, the iBook store is only available in the US initially and who knows how long before a decent book library will be available outside the US. And when it does, how will it compare to the already established and fast-growing Amazon Kindle library.
Yeah, you can manually put some ebooks on the iPad but the beauty of the Kindle is Whispernet, which allows you to purchase and download books on the fly from the Amazon store anywhere in the world, without the need for a computer or wifi.
I'll be getting the iPad for sure but not because of the eReader aspect of the device (will be keeping my Kindle 2) but I agree with the other poster that Newspapers, magazines and other periodicals (especially those with embedded colorful graphics) will most likely be better on the iPad. -
That's the most people have with a new product, they only look at what they would use it for instead of the intended use. Here is exactly what Jobs said it was made to do...
Browsing
Email
Photos
Videos
Music
Games
Ebooks
I think Apple did pretty well at meeting those goals. It's not exactly what I was looking for but it is what Apple felt the majority of people were looking for. It simple to use, easy to maintain and does all the basic functions most people want at a reasonable price. I see a market for it outside of the Apple "cult" as you put it. People didn't see a market for many of Apple's products, we'll just have to wait and see. -
Jervis, I mostly agree with you, but... even for some of those things I think it may leave something to be desired. Here's my best guess as to how good it will be with these things... I may have to adjust my opinions when I get to try it in person.
Browsing - I think it will be excellent for this. Grade: A
Email - good if you don't need to type too much, or can use a separate keyboard. (To be honest, I'd rather use a netbook for this so I can type more easily.) Grade: B+
Photos - excellent for viewing photos, I would think. Grade: A
Videos - er, well they botched it for movies by not making it widescreen... but for some casual video/youtube it should be good. Grade: B
Music - yeah, it should be good for this. Grade: A
Games - I don't know... kind of a big thing to hold the whole time you're playing... maybe if you can use a bluetooth controller of some sort. Grade: B-
Ebooks - well, not as good as e-ink for more serious reading... but the color screen should make it better for magazines and newspapers. I'd love to read the newspaper at breakfast with this thing. Grade: A-
I'll add one more category too:
Productivity - iWork looks like it'll be nice on this, but no USB ports and limited software choice may be limitations. And no multitasking. And you'd need to get a keyboard and dock/stand. (Can it print to a network printer?) Grade: B- -
No flash support for Browsing, so thats a B for me
-
HTML 5!! I'm not worried about Flash. I'll be happy when that hog of a program is history.
-
Yup. The lack of Flash will be annoying for a few months, until web sites migrate to HTML 5 video. Once that happens, I might Flash from my PC too, since the only other things it's used for is annoying ads that around the screen and get in the way of seeing the page.
-
NOBODY who is looking for eBooks will EVER look at the iPad... unless of course they're a total fanboy of Mac.
If given the choice between buying a kindle, and getting a free iPad *FOR READING BOOKS* I would flat-out, no questions asked buy a Kindle before forcing myself to become more near-sighted and have more headaches by staring at the iPad display for hours. I power-read my books, 2 hours would be a "quick read".
I think the only person(s) being naive is Apple and Jobs thinking that releasing a jumbo iPod Touch with books being the only added "feature" is something we wanted/needed. -
I guess we have to wait to see what reviewers say about reading on it! I can read 2-3 hours on my IPhone/hero/tatoo/hd2 no problem! also, reading more then an hour w/o break is wrong in general!
regarding battery, SJ told Mossberg that it will play music for 140 hours! -
No. Money is no obstacle for class and style.
-
Funny, I stare at a computer screen all day at work - no eye strain. I then go home and stare at my computer screen - still no eye strain. Yes there will be people who prefer one over the other, lets leave it at that.
-
As a user of both a tablet and an ebook, there is no comparison. Also, how is the returns of the kindle only linking to the ipad? The ipad isnt even released yet, and no one has introduced the topic of the nook which has just come to the market. I agree with those who say this is something only fanboys will jump on, because its true. It has all the functions of an ipod, only I cant hold it in the palm of my hand. Ill stick with my itouch. I could buy an itouch and a netbook for the same price as a iPad, and enjoy itt so much more.
-
actually people would, e-books are much cheaper, and a lot of the ebooks that are going to be available for the ipad will not be on the kindle dx. I have been trying to get the kindle dx as a replacement, but it just does not have a great selection of textbooks.
The ipad on the otherhand will be able to read the online version of the textbook. Just like is seen in this video. I already have 2 books this semester I bought on course smart because of the savings, they already have stated on their website they are working on an ipad app as we speak.
But I do think it is overpriced. I think 399, 499, 599 would be more appropriate. or 449 549 649
Take a look

Depends on the production costs now dont it?
-
There is going to be a lot of people who figure out the hard way that reading pages of text off of a backlit lcd screen close to your face causes some amazing headaches and eye strain. Thats why eInk is so popular.
You'll see ;-) -
Agreed. but that would be so much more stuff to carry.
-
The iTouch fits in your pocket... you dont have to carry it
Better yet, get an iPhone. Then you dont have to carry a mp3 player AND a cell phone. -
I don't think they will compete. Kindle's screen = Epic Win for readers. Feels like your reading paper.
I think the iPad price is pretty good, but I really would not buy one if I had an iPhone. I think the iPad makes an amazing present or gift though. -
I don't really think the long term target audience is a current iPod/iPhone customer. I still think they are going after the same crowd Nintendo captured with the Wii. You don't need to be tech savvy to use the iPad, there is little upkeep and you can still do the most used functions of a computer. The Wii is fun for all but doesn't have the latest stuff the tech heads want. The iPad will be along the same lines for computing.swarmer said: ↑Yeah, but that's useless... if you're walking around, it's much easier to use your iPod, not iPad. If you're at home, you can plug it in to AC power. And if you're somewhere else, you probably want to use the screen to do other stuff.
Besides, the main reason to get this instead of an iPod Touch is the big screen.
So... nice in theory, but I can't think of a situation where it matters much.Click to expand...
iPad price too much???
