good reviews are good.
I suppose as long as people keep in mind that this will be a *consumption* device and not a *creation* device, expectations will be properly aligned and people will be satisfied.
as in, if you need something you can *create* things on, get a laptop/netbook/desktop. if you'd like something you can just consume on (at least for 95% of the time) and don't really need to do things like print, the iPad will work just fine for you and will probably be more convenient for mail and certain applications than anything else you have. But you'll still need a real computer...so don't expect to suddenly be able to live without a real machine.
In for 2. Party on. -
I can't wait to see one in person, being in Canada I'll have to wait till April 24th for that.
-
I don't understand why people would want an oversize iPhone....
Waste of money in my opinion. Rather add this money to my macbook pro purchase and get the top of the line 15".....if they ever get released damn it! -
People obviously want a very large ipod touch. Good for them.
A lot of those links don't work btw. -
Nice reviews, I like that they're not overwhelmingly positive. Keeps them real (as opposed to completely glowing). I'm very interested in the CBS app and the likes, allowing for full streaming of a lot of shows. That will prove interesting in this space.
-
I should have mine Saturday. Expect an unboxing/pictures/review that day if I'm feeling up to it.
-
-
Yes, they're still good reviews, and yes these are the people that historically are preferred by Apple to review these products (however, I do respect Andy Ihnatko, he's pretty good about not being overwhelmingly biased).
-
I saw Andy Demo it on TWiT/Macbreak Weekly, and it really makes me want it more then what Apple demos did.
-
I can understand why people would feel it isn't a creation device but I have a feeling people will be proven wrong. I don't think its a desktop/laptop killer but it may become the preferred device of some. -
I am really excited, I'm looking forward to the battery life the most. Off the top of my head I cant think of a device that can deliver 10 hours of battery and stay that thin and usable. My wife and I will get our's Saturday! I post what I can then.
-
-
My guess would be no but maybe if they zoom in to do the detail work? It will be interesting when a few reviews come in.
-
I wonder whether they could get a stylus up and running. I know Apple hates stylus(es?) but if they could get one together for the iPad it could replace the Wacom tablets for graphic designers. Again, they'd need to configure the iPad to ignore your hand when you have a pen in hand.
As for that picture, that is very impressive - and I think yes it was done with one's fingers. After all, the New Yorker has covers made from an iPhone screen, so an iPad shouldn't be that big of a challenge after that.

More content creation aps...
Mixr DJ turntable - Though the jury's out on whether iPad-toting disc jockeys will make it past a club bouncer -- much less be allowed to spin -- Mixr sounds like the app they'd want to use. The program's creators say multitouch will allow prospective DJs to simply reach out and touch the virtual tables to manipulate knobs, faders, transitions and digital vinyl, and turn the iPad on its side to flip through their "record crate" library of ready albums.
Pricing unknown, planned June 2010 release
Nota piano trainer - Nota's no stranger to the App Store; the piano training software received considerable acclaim in an earlier iPhone incarnation, and as far as we know, its laudable features translate directly to the larger screen. So why are we excited to try it on iPad? Simple: now that we can fit more than three fingers on screen, we can actually play the blasted thing. [Via Crave]

Brushes painting application ($10) - Brushes paintings famously made it onto the cover of The New Yorker; now the popular iPhone app wants a faster, larger home. Taking advantage of not only screen size but enhanced processor power, Brushes for iPad allows you to zoom to 3200% (twice as far as its smaller counterpart), store favorite colors as swatches, and watch how your creations came together after the fact in a video replay mode.

I got one to try out on my iphone, works quite well, not as good as my wacom, but much more accurate then my finger.

But yea i cant wait for real world reviews, although i read somwhere they were able to get 12 hours of HD movie watching!!!
nd here is a teardown by the FCC http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/02/fcc-reveals-ipad-internals-you-still-dont-have-one/
And here are some pics of what ppl created using Brushes in the Iphonehttp://brushesapp.com/artists/

I disagree with these "creation apps." Let's say you buy the iPad instead of a netbook. Now, you can't have the internet open and work at word at the same time. I think apple shouldve released it along with OS4.0. Wouldve been a lot more attractive to a lot more people
-
I briefly considered the iPad for my g/f to replace her first gen iPod Touch which has started gotten clunky despite $50 in protective film and cases but then I remembered the $30-40 I've spent updating the damned software to enable functionality it should have come with. Even the new ones don't seem to enable anything but it still adds cost on top just to play a few games. -
-
-
1. How can you disagree with an app?
2. Windows, Windows mobile, OS X charge for major OS updates that add functionality that should have been there already. -
Of course, Windows Mobile often can't be upgraded at all. You're stuck with what you bought, even if a new version comes out the very next day. This is certainly better than that. -
-
MS is releasing free patches because they have to. They are trying to compete with the biggest MP3 player maker ever. -
And why is it that Microsoft HAS TO? Apple should be doing its consumers a favor and releasing the patches free of charge. It's like Microsoft charging for each service pack, because truthfully, there isn't going to be a major overhaul of anything, except for the fact that it's finally going to be able to multitask.
PS I never shop at bestbuy.
Look at Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias=aps&field-keywords=apple+ipod&x=0&y=0
You can get a 16 gig Zune HD for the price of an 8 gig iPod touch. Does that say enough? -
I think we're about to go from a little off topic into closed thread zone quickly. Lets just do a quick wrap up of the off topic part and move on.
1. iPod has to pay for major updates and gets the smaller ones leading up to it for free like with Windows or OS X operating systems. Some people think paying $10 is highway robbery while others see it as the same thing as paying for the newest version of a computer's OS.
2. iPhone gets the OS updates for free currently (as long as your phone meets the requirements). Some argue that Windows mobile used to charge for these updates before the W7 mobile which cannot be used on older phones. Others will argue that the iPhone gets the free updates because Apple is making extra money from the deal w/ATT that they do not get with the iPods.
3. The usual "Apple premium" or Apple tax" arguments. Some argue that the iPods are overpriced compared to the competition depending on where you shop. Others go by MSRP where Apple is competitive or point out that the Apple products are better or the industry leader and therefor are worth more.
Now back to the iPad...
Engadget's review is up now. -
I just finished playing around with one. It's pretty responsive. I wound't mind trying out the Resident Evil 4 App on this thing.
-
Hmm..the more I see the review and videos the more I want to play with one. And I know after I get my hands on one I'm gonna want to buy one. Before I was just "meh...big iPod touch", but now it seems like it is much more than that. I'm now deciding between a Nexus One and an iPad. In all honesty I can wait for the iPad but it definitely looks apple has hit it again.
-
Just read the Engadget review; very thorough and objective. And even with all the negatives mentioned I feel like I want one now even more. I think the iPad is gonna sell quite comfortably despite all the initial "it's a big iPod" sentiment which, I admit, I've shared myself. And being a Kindle user I really didn't think the e-reader aspect of the device would garner that much positivity, but it did. Well done Apple.

Got my 64GB Wifi iPad earlier today & it's totally worth it. Have yet to run into any issues & the screen is so beautiful esp when playing 720p movies. Keyboard does take some time to get use to but good nevertheless. I know I'm not going into details & being lazy but when I'm having fun with my iPad.
PS: iBook is remarkable & the iPad is so fast.
my 2 cents worth -
picked mine up today and it's excellent.
IPS display lag is there, though, so be aware. if your eyes are sensitive to slow pixel blur (what you see on a TV that has a high "ms response time"), try before you buy.
my Best Buy has a ton of them. they were kinda low on 16GBs, but had plentiful amounts of the 32 and 64 varities.
I'd recommend it to anyone who is a combination of all 3 of the following:
-Not a fan of managing or dealing with computers or are otherwise not proficient in computer knowledge
-Doesn't browse content on sites that prominently feature flash
-Doesn't need to print very often
If that's you, look no further. Otherwise, it's a "want" rather than a "need". It doesn't do anything a computer you already own doesn't do. It does things differently...and at times more elegantly and quickly. For the technology-averse, it's the perfect machine.
But beware to all the moms that want to watch the live broadcasts online for sites like "Shop at Home" or news video archives at sites like CNN, MSNBC or Fox: flash = must = sadfaced iPad owner. -
-
I think I will skip out on the iPad, although I love certain elements of it. My ideal tablet device would have to be more powerful than the iPad, since I want content creation, performance and hardware modification abilities!
- I see ips display on the iPad and really wants wacom stylus support so I can draw!
- I see the guts of it, and I want MXM VGA extension, core i5/i7, hot swappable battery!
- I see the connectors and I want more connectivity built-in!
- I see storage and I want 2.5" SATA HDD support! I'd pay for a 128GB SSD easy!
- I see the OS and I want it to run Win7 too!
- I see games and I want to run Crysis on it.
Basically, those things are the only factors preventing me from getting the iPad. Otherwise, she's beautiful... -
^ the technology is a couple of years away for that tablet at a good price.
for tablets to work, they have to be reasonably light. under 3lbs, really. in order to get the tech to run smoothly with a full OS, you'd need enough power under the hood. that kind of power isn't small enough to get inside a 1-3lbs screen-only tablet for cheap.
and really...you're gonna have to drop the whole gaming requirement. that won't happen until 2016 or something. mine as well enjoy an iPad for a few years, then sell it than wait empty-handed for half the decade trying to prove a point. -
Intel atom must be better than that A4....
Also Asus is supposed to come out with two tablets, one running android, one chrome OS...and I'm sorry..but at least Android mutitasks and has flash, they are supposed to be sub 400$...like a big old Nexis one scaled up to big..which may be better than a Scaled up iPod Touch in a 10 incher. -
8600m GT can push crysis already at the resolution that we see with ipad! laptop that have this kind of hardware under the hood since 2007. Wacom stylus can be seen with tablets, so that's why I am really hoping to see this kind of computing power in the iPad form factor.
I blame the geek in me in thinking of a laptop with wacom sensitivity touchscreen instead of what iPad is right now -
-
I wonder How loyal Apple's fan are? I would say it is good to buy for $200 or so, never $500
-
Right... -
they COULD charge less; they just don't have to. they like their self-imposed high-priced exclusivity. -
-
-
If the iPad costs $250 in parts and they sell it for $500 they think they are making $250 profit, But I'd be surprised if they are making more then $100 profit on them.
I think Sony is still LOSING money on every PS3 that is sold. -
After messing around with my wife's 32 gb iPad last night and this morning...we're heading out today to see if any of the Apple stores in our area have any more in stock so I can have one.
With my laptop I thought I had no need nor use for one...but boy was I wrong. The thing is so convenient for web browsing and whatnot...I gotta get one now. Hell I might even start reading books now. lol -
