I knew a lot of people who have iPod touch. They say its perfect and they use it all the time. Until they tried an iPad. Now it's inferior and small and no fun. I wonder how much this hurt ipod touch sales. I had a touch and gave it away after owning an iPad. It's just a better experience.
I know they are coming with an iPad two soon but I think it will be awhile before I adopt it. Having way to much fun with iPod one now. If you have a iPod touch try the iPad. You won't be disappointed.

I've seen an iPad and owned several iPhones/iPods and the reason I didn't get an iPad is I can't slip it into my pocket. I don't want to have to carry a man-purse with an iPad in it. Serious, if you going to carry and iPad, get a MB Air, or some small netbook.

it just hurts when I jam the iPad in my pocket though

My positions is that, #1) the iPod Touch is a completely irrelevant device.
It is an iPhone without the phone, so it is just a touch screen iPod that can do some other stuff. But you need a phone, so you're just carrying an extra device for no good reason.
To me, the iTouch's success has been totally fanboy driven. Would anyone buy an Android Touch player (no Phone capabilities)? I think not.
I am waiting anxiously for the iPad 2. The iPad is very cool to play with but utterly useless for my uses:
1) Flash websites, and streaming videos
2) USB and Compact Flash slots for photos or whatever
3) Front facing camera for Facetime -
But yea, iPod touch and iPad are 2 completely different devices. -

This is great for public transportation and different work or travel environments, you can use it standing in line for something, or whatever.
I would carry both with me if I went out of town - a 13" Air and the 10" iPad.
On another note, Verizon will be introducing the iPhone tomorrow so I can finally ditch my Droid! Wooh! -

I'll be buying the iPhone 4, and then later when the iPhone 5 comes out with LTE this year or next, I'll use my upgrade and sell the 4. -

I think what people are missing out here is the price point. The iPad and iPhone both cost around 3 times the price of an iPod Touch.
Another factor is that some people might not want to use an iPhone or iPad, for example if they already have a good mobile phone, or if they have the HP Slate or simply have no need for a tablet.
The iPod Touch is an iPod that can run iPhone apps. Saying that it serves no purpose just because you can get an iPad or iPhone is like saying that all portable music players serve no purpose (i.e. why get a MS Zune/Creative Zen/Sony Walkman/Archos Vision etc. when you can get an iPhone/iPad?). -

My phone has a line out, but my mp3 player offers much much better SQ (s:flo2) -
I have iPhone 4 and i had ipad for a while...I actually ended up returning the iPad for the new Macbook Air 13" because I felt like the ipad was a big iphone 4 without a camera. It had its good points, but I got tired of quick of paying for data over 3G, and in the end a macbok air 13 is so light and portable I went for that. Glad I did.

So what's the difference between an "iPad" and an "iPad Touch"? I thought all iPads were touch based devices?
Or do you mean the iPod Touch? -
If you care about your music, a phone doesn't cut it.
And the idea that a tablet can replace a DAP is pretty laughable really. -
I guess Im not that big of an audiophile as I notice zero difference between my music coming out of my brother ipod, my old stolen ipod or my cell phone. All seems to sound the same to me, and that is why my cell phone replaced my mp3 player. Basically the same thing that happened to my digital camera and air card. Got the same use from one device as opposed to many.
-
It depends a lot on the headphones you use - it doesn't matter how good a player you have it you use crappy 'phones.
And to be honest, if all you've ever tried is the iPod, then I'm not surprised you can't hear much/any difference between that and your phone.
iPods aren't lauded for their sound quality.
When I moved from my Nano to my Sony A829, I heard a distinct difference despite using the same files and headphones.
Then when I replaced my headphones with a better pair, I heard a difference again. -
I have a nice set of bose headphones that definitely make a difference. I thought y'all were referring to ipods vs ipad for sound quality. Either way my epic 4g has all my music now and it works for me over the aux port in my jeep, although I would like new speakers the standard ones are pretty good.
As for the ipad conversation, honestly it covers all the needs of those who use netbooks or ultraportables (minus rigs like the m11x) and seems to do it well. -
The IPOD touch may not serve any purpose to you. However, there are individuals, especially teens, who parents would not want them to have a cell phone but would not want to deprive them of a content consumption device such as the Ipod touch. That's one example. Another example could be that I am a blackberry fan. However, when it comes to content consumption, I'm just not going to get that same performance from the BB so I go to the IPOD touch without emptying my pockets.
All the Mac items thus far are relevant in their own way. Otherwise, Apple would have ceased development on them. -

But not enough that I actually care about.
And iPhone's audio and Ipod Touch's audio... why wouldn't they sound exactly the same? -
As for the rest of it, of course matters like sound quality and the value you attach to having a device or headphones that will give you better sound quality is purely subjective.
But for those who do care, a dedicated ( and most likely non-Apple) DAP is a must. -
Yea you need
Good file quality (320 kpbs .mp3 or lossless)
Good source
Good headphones
I notice an instant difference between my iPod touch and my s:flo2 using the same headphones and same file.
-
Thus, the only options for these customers are to buy an iPhone off contract and use it as an iPod touch, or buy a much much cheaper iPod touch. Obvious choice. This is also why a dedicated Android mp3 player is also coming out, for people who want the Android device and apps, but don't want to pay over the data plan costs. -

By the way, iPHones and ... most other "Smartphones" are nearly completely pointless without a data plan to most users. Nobody is going to give you free WiFi, so unless you spend your days in Starbucks, you lose the smart in "Smart"phones - instant access to unlimited information through the internet and all the applications that rely on it.
Most of my family just use their iPhones without data on them and use them like regular phones with an Mp3 player attached... a real waste but they are tech-illiterate. It takes them ages to learn anything related to computers and electronics, so using the phones as iPods is already a huge step for them. -
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
To clarify for others here -- Verizon, according to their posted FAQ, *will* require a data plan to purchase the iP4.
1. Are there minimum service and data pricing requirements?
Yes, iPhone customers will need to choose from any of the current Nationwide plans. Customers will also be required to activate a data package, pricing will be announced at a later date.
28 days and counting ... can't wait -
iPod Touch is used as a bait to get people to switch to iPhone.
-
i just like the touch because it does much more than the ipod classic. I prefer to keep my mp3 players and phones to be separate due to battery life issues. The Ipod Touch fits my needs just perfectly since it plays movies, music, has wifi, apps, third party support, etc... and that's all I really need.
iPad ruined iPad touch experience
