I have an current 3rdgen ipod touch 3G, that's beginning to wear over time, and wondering is an ipad worth upgrading to, or just send it to apple to get it fixed. If so, are there any suggestions in particular whether which model I should also get? I live in Canada and the ipad isn't fully out yet, but there have been thousands, literally thousands of ipad listings on ebay, thats the basic 16gb wifi model, selling for 600 bucks and more. So is this overpaying really necessary?

I really want an ipad but i don't know if its worth it if i already have an ipod touch, because imo its just a bigger ipod touch, i mean not really, but it can do anything the ipod touch can, and vice versa.

depends of what are you planning to do with it.

To me it's like an extra big toy and waste of money.

fact I had an iPod Touch because I can't get away with music, music video and time killing games and small enough to fit in my pocket. + my current cellphone still in 2 years contract. About to end in 1-2 months... hurray iPhone 4G. So I can ditch my Touch and crap Phone soon!

The ipod is built for mobility. If you do any activity, running, biking, or just for listening to it on the car etc, then stick with the ipod.

iPod touch will get an update with the A4 processor after the iphone 4g comes out, sometime in fall or winter, whenever the annual update is. It'll most likely get that camera and resolution bump too.

Honestly, if you want to wait for an update, wait for that.

It doesn't sound like you really "get" the iPad anyways.

iPod touch and Ipad cater to different users and business models. It is not worth to consider iPad an upgrade from iPod touch point of view. Something to add to one's collection of Apple Gadgets :p

    cheers ...

If you are using the touch as a portable music player for things like jogging you will not want an iPad. You would look pretty silly. If you use it for mail, calendars, video, music, web and don't care that you can't put the device in your pocket, the iPad may be a better choice. Like others have said, it comes down to how you plan to use it. I would not buy on ebay, wait for it to get released and use the extra money to get one with more storage or to buy a case and dock.

To the OP; I wouldn't get one from eBay. We're only a few weeks away from a Canada launch (rumour has it that Apple employees in Canada have a May 24 black-out day - not allowed to take that day off) and you'll get the choice of memory options as well as the 3G model and you won't be overpaying. But most importantly, if you buy it and don't like it you'll have the chance to take it back; won't get that option if bought on eBay. Just my 2c.

I saw and used an iPad (non-3G) this past week (a friend was visiting from the States) and I can tell you I was on the fence before, not anymore. I want one. And no, it's not merely a large iPod Touch. ;) And it wouldn't replace my iPod Touch either; will still be using my iPod in the car and while working out etc... as others have mentioned.

I have an iPod Touch and iPad - they are used for different things. I mainly use the iPod Touch for music when working out. I don't normally carry it around with me because my eyesight is so bad that I can't use it without glasses.

The iPad is more of an information/entertainment device with a screen large enough to make it more enjoyable to use. I basically use the iPad for things that I used to use my MacBook Pro for. The portability is nice for bringing around the house. If I need more resolution or need to do data entry or do real work, then I use my laptop or desktop. A lot of the read-only type stuff I do on the iPad now.

One other big difference is that the iPad has reasonable speakers so that I don't have to carry earphones or my wireless Bluetooth headset around with me.

ok, well thanks for the replies I slightly have a better idea of what i'm looking for now. Is it worth buying to replace a netbook? I think it can do all the things a netbook do better, because of the touch screen, portability, and workmanship. What do you guys think?

EDIT: ALSO, will the ipad play hd content, if connected to an HDTV, without stutter? When will be the ideal time for the ipad line to receive an update? I would wait for that!

I thought the iPad would be a great alternative to cheap wind aspire notebooks of 10 inch, because its super light, super thin, and a 9~10 inch touch screen. Anything a netbook is for, the iPad really does perform them better, and smoother!

Netbooks and laptops give you full access to the file system and allow you to do far more things than you can do on the iPad. I use the iPad for various things now but I still need to go to my desktop or laptop for some other things.

With the release of Spirit, it's a whole new ballgame with the iPad.

I wouldn't hold your breath as they just released one with 3G. I would estimate that it is going to see a refresh once a year like the iphone currently does.

I get that, but i'm just confused. The iPad can do everything a netbook is made for, which is web browsing, music, email, net stuff
...I mean who would wanna do really techy and computer platform necessary tasks on a netbook? I use my macbook pro for that, but as something smaller, to replace a job of the netbook, is the iPad worth it for that? I mean if MBP 15 with an ipad is really ideal, as the 15 is sometimes a little big for me personally, would it also be wise to choose the MBP13 in the beginning?

Just wondering, i have a netbook, i really don't like the workmanship of it, infact i hate it besdies the point that its small, its got hdmi, thats it. But what i really mean is that, ipad CAN really replace a netbook (11.6 and under), but not a laptop.

You can do email on the iPad in some cases. I wasn't able to connect to my workplace email because some of the settings available in Thunderbird aren't available on the iPad. With a netbook, this wouldn't be a problem.

I can log into work fairly easily with a Netbook as the VPN environment is already there as are the tools to access the systems that I need. I am still trying to get this to work on the iPad but our workplace doesn't seem to be setup for the iPad.

I don't own a netbook but I have used them. I do think that the combination of an iPad + MacBook Pro is better than a netbook. The iPad is faster, has outstanding battery life and turns on faster than anything else that I've seen. You do need to use it in conjunction with another computer for backup and moving things back and forth to the iPad.
