I have an iPhone 3G and I'm noticing that I am not receiving SMS text messages sent from online sources, like AIM or Yahoo messenger, Gmail SMS, from the option inside the new Yahoo mail, or any other 3rd party free SMS utility on the internet. I have tested this out on my own iPhone by sending an SMS message to myself (trying both (xxx) xxx-xxxx and 1 (xxx) xxx-xxxx formats ) and also by asking friends to do the same.
Neither works and after calling the AT&T store they said I had to come into the store and they would replace my SIM card. However I would think that there should be a better way than to have to go into the store just and have a SIM card replaced. What if I still dont get any SMS messages from online sources? My SIM card is just a few months old as is the phone.
Is there some sort of blocking going on from AT&T? I am able to send and receive SMS text messages to other phones just fine. The interesting thing is that when someone sends me an SMS, say from AIM, a message is returned to them, some default message saying that their message has been sent, but I do not receive their message, yet I see a small envelope logo in the top bar of my iPhone on the left side of the battery. That logo does not disappear until the SpringBoard is reloaded.
Sorry to be lengthy about this but does anyone have thoughts on whats going on or how to resolve it?
Thanks,

Getting a dedicated AIM/MESSENGER/whatever program is a lot better then this. Try beejive
. If not, try backing up and restoring.

I do use BeeJive IM but this is meant more for being able to receive SMS text messages from those of my friends who dont have SMS on their phones or choose to send me an occasional SMS from AIM/IM client/3rd party free SMS utility over the internet.

Any suggestions?

have you tried sending an "e-mail" from gmail to your phone
should be like sent like this:
[10-digit phone number]@txt.att.net
Example: [email protected]
also, have your friends "add" a new buddy to aim, but instead use your phone number like this:
add a +1 in front of your 10digit phone number example: "+12125551212"
also, if you have an aim account yourself, in the settings, set up "mobile forwarding" so when you sign off from your computer, messages will be "forwarded" to your phone as SMS. -

Have you tried using your SIM card in a different phone(or a friends phone)? If it works in another phone, then the problem is not with the SIM card.
edit: I just sent myself an e-mail through gmail and this is what showed up:
This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification
edit 2: I just went to cingularme.com and signed up for e-mail texts. I think this is something new they are doing, since I was able to receive e-mail texts from gmail before. -

So I just came back from the AT&T store and the guy tried doing something with the SIM card, rebooted it, hard-rebooted it, and the issue still remains. If anyone or myself sends a message via SMS to my cell phone number from AIM on a mobile phone or AIM on a computer, or Gmail SMS/Yahoo mail SMS/etc, it still does not show up, and just shows a little envelope icon next to my battery icon.

Have you tried going to cingularme.com?

What does cingularme.com do? Right now I am restoring my iPhone with iTunes so it should have a fresh iPhone OS 2.2 on it in a few minutes. Hopefully this solves the problem.

I hope you haven't started because it's a new thing AT&T is doing. You gotta sign up for mymessages.att.com or cingularme.com. And then change the settings for your phone. I just sent myself emails from two different emails and aim and they all worked, and they didn't before.
You can even set up an email address for your friends to text you. -
I just restored my iPhone and I tested the SMS by sending a message from AIM and it works. I also went to mymessages.att.com and made an registered with my phone number and see some settings I can adjust for SMS and MMS.
Thanks for your help. I guess just restoring the phone got it done. Everything is backed up and already sync'd now.
