If you care about multitasking killing your battery you wouldn't multitask in the first place...

WOOHOOO! MULTITASKING!
Can't wait to see what the next update will bring (hardware-wise). -

tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
I never found anything wrong with my battery life with jailbreaking. I keep my screen at full brightness, use backgrounder alot, text all day, listen to music all day and it would still have + 30% by the end of the day.
the only thing that drained my battery was bluetooth via tethering, but that is just common sense. -
you bought the phone as-is and it was good enough then, right?
unless the features you have on your phone now are going to magically stop working, I don't understand all this butt-hurt.
but I'm done with the subject. carry on, soldier. -
Summary:
Persons group A is saying Apple isn't letting 3G users multitask and that's lame because you can multitask while jailbroken. Persons group B are saying "who cares, the 3G is two years old, they don't have to support it anymore, and it only has half the RAM and a slower processor on top of that." Group A is saying that the 3G is still on sale, that all Apple wants is money, and that Android is the future.
My response? Not supporting the 3G is lame, but not entirely unheard of. While it is true that you can multitask on a jailbroken 3G just fine, you have to be careful. Backgrounding an intensive game like NOVA makes even my 3GS crawl; Apple doesn't want people out there complaining when they try to multitask two games, a Twitter client, Facebook, the new game-center-xbox-live-whatever-it's-called, an IM client, Mail, Safari, phone, Messages, and their bank app and then complaining when it crashes and has to be restarted. Remember: you can't complain to Apple for a jailbreak problem, but you can (and will) for a support OS feature. My only problem with this is that the 3G is still on sale; Apple should've stopped selling it a long time ago if they knew it couldn't handle OS4's multitasking.
Per the money issue: of course Apple wants your money. They run a business, not a charity. How is this any different than any other company? What about Microsoft? You can buy an HD2 right now that is more than capable of running Windows Phone 7, but they won't let you upgrade at any point for any reason. You just have to buy a new phone. Windows Mobile is notorious for not allowing upgrades, even if your phone is brand new and more capable than a newer phone with slower hardware.
As for Android taking over, I would love to see it become more popular. The problem is that it won't ever become as ubiquitous as the iPhone because there is such a wide variety of hardware. App developers are leary of the platform because you never know what hardware it's going to be run on... will the user have a keyboard? multitouch or not? do they have a ball, d-pad, or optical trackpad? what processor do they have? how much RAM? what screen resolution? There are too many variables. What's worse is that they don't force OEMs to use certain versions, so phones came out 3 or 4 months ago with 2.1 and other phones are coming out 3 or 4 months from now with 1.5. On top of that, OEM skinning causes updates to be few and far between. It's just a big mess.
I understand why people love Android, and that's great. I love the concept of Android. But what works on PC doesn't always work on a phone IMO. And the bottom line is that until there's unified hardware and software AND you can get developers on board to bring great games and apps like Tony Hawk, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Shazam, Bump, etc, it's never going to compete with the iPhone in the general consumer space. But not everybody's a general consumer, so if you're not, have at it. That's freedom of choice, people. -

I'm sure people would be upset it windows 7 was only available to people with i7 processors, even if they bought their laptop with windows vista (especially if their laptop is less than 2 years old).
If apple wants to make money, then charge some money for the 4.0 OS, which makes more sense to me and not force people to spend $300 every 2 years for a new phone -
Hi, Folks,
Wow, what a "delightful" bunch of characters I find in this forum. Gadzooks, I'm returning to the Vaio forums, and won't bother anyone here again.
Good Luck,
Mark -
Anyways I agree with what Paul said about the android, that is the main problem with it, it is a problem that Apple doesn't have and Windows phone series 1 mobile 7 (yeah I know) is trying to prevent with hardware specification that the phones needs to meet to be able to use it's OS, unlike android, anyone can pretty much use it. Like it or not, and more locked down and controlled mobile phone OS will be a better OS. -
Not sure if it's posted here yet but Steve's whole video keynote is now up. I really enjoyed watching it. Here's the link.

Ronnieb, fact of the matter is that the 3g used the same internals as the 2g iphone (besides the 2g antenna) so it IS 3 year old hardware. I have owned all generations of the iphone (jailbroken all of them) and multitasking on the 3g with 3.0 was absolutely terrible. It was acceptable on 2.0 which ran a bit quicker. The 3gs was a significant upgrade in terms of internals (processor, gpu and ram) and made 3.0 bearable. 3.0 stock on the 3g was laggy as hell, add in 4.0 and multitasking and it would be a fiasco.
One more thing that bugs me... about your argument and the 3g whiners is that you feel like apple owes you something. You bought their product, it was acceptable to you-- but now you want more out of it than when you purchased it. Even if the 3g was able to handle multitasking beautifully (it can't) apple would still want to push people to upgrade to a newer device. Apple likes profit, if withholding features from a TWO GENERATION OLD device will get people to upgrade, you better bet they will push you that way. They don't want people staying on the older iphones... upgraders=money. -
I was hoping they'd change the lock screen, too bad they didn't! Unified inbox is nice, multi-tasking is nice. Backgrounds I feel are generally too distracting, I'll either leave it black or keep it simple

and well said. -
Wait, so if I wanted to buy an iPod Touch, I'd just have to get the 32Gb or 64Gb version and with just a firmware update I could have 4.0 with multitasking?
Sorry for the noob question. -
^^^
Yes, but most likely you'll be paying for it. 3.0 was $10 for iPod Touch users. Free for iPhone users. Things could change though. -
^^^
Yes if you get the latest touch you will be able to upgrade to 4.0.
Although its quite possible that apple may charge you a small fee ($10) for this, as they have in the past. Although as they recently changes there accounting practices its possible that they might not.

I think 4.0 is gonna be really great for iPhone users and I have to admit I love the implementation of the new folders. I've had that on my BB for a long time and I use it a lot to organise my apps and I've always thought it was kinda silly not having it on the iPhone.
I'll be upgrading to the new iPhone late summer for sure now, saying goodbye to my trusty BB. I just hope Apple can give us improved (even just a little) battery life in the new one. -
I don't think Apple will be charging, they kind learned there lesson from last time that most people won't buy it. They also didn't mention anything about a price. Plus I think they would want people to upgrade so they can get use of iAd.
-
So iPhone 3G won't get iPhone OS 4? Big deal. 3g came out two years ago your in for an update anyway, get the iPhone 4 when it comes out this summer. And if your still going to be in contract, then you should of knew what you signed up for...
-
Of course Apple loves profit, that's why you can only extend your warranty for another 2 years and that's it. But that's 3 years. The 3g hasn't been out for 2 years.
-
you're like a broken record.
your issue is with your service provider's bad contract...which you agreed to for a phone that you certainly weren't guaranteed any of the features that the new OS will provide...which has nothing to do with Apple. Apple isn't obligated to add any more features to the device you bought after you bought it. They're not taking any features away from you that you didn't already have. It's not like they're *removing* multitasking or other features that are already up and running on your device. They're simply not adding it.
The tech in your phone (and my phone, I also have a 3G) is 2 generations old and 3 years old. It's like 50% slower than the 3GS. it has half the memory of the 3GS. it is shamefully outperformend by the Nexus One, Droid, and other recent phones. Maybe you're new to the smartphone world, but 3 year-old tech in the cellphone world is ANCIENT. 3 years ago, Blackberry's were fat, ugly and monocromatic. 3 years ago, the best WinMo phone was the t-Mobile MDA and the Dash. none of which run the 2010 versions of their respective OSes. None of which you'd be caught dead with in this day and age.
At the end of the day, you have a choice to make: if you suddenly don't like your iPhone for some reason, end your contract and sell it on eBay. if you can't stand your provider, end your contract and sell your phone on eBay. if you want the new features, upgrade to a 3GS or 4G and pay the cost to do it. But to be sure, the form and functionality of your iPhone remains just as good today as it was 2 days ago when you weren't pissing and moaning about what your phone can't do and what you feel Apple owes you, as if Apple is Rogers. Be glad you're getting some new features, which Apple was under absolutely, positively, 100% no obligation to provide to you for free after sale.
I wonder if all the people that bought WinMo phones are whining like this because their devices won't run Windows 7 Mobile? I doubt it. They're probably looking forward to the next thing. You're ridiculous. I wonder if you're still running XP and are upset that Microsoft is going to drop all support for it in a few years. Buh buh...after a decade after your small purchase, they still owe you regular upgrades!
3G whiners FTL.
everyone knows Apple releases a new phone every summer, and your device may or may not get all the new upgrades. this is not hard to understand. you buy the phone as-is. you don't buy the product based on what you hope it will one day be able to do. that's stupid. stu-pid. -
tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
In the end, our point is that apple is forcing us to buy a new product by lying about incompatibility issues. IF they REALLY cared about their customers, they would try their hardest to make their customers happy with their phone. When we bought our phones, we expected to AT LEAST last until the end of our 3 year contract. I don't see how anyone would buy a new phone every 2 years, especially at the price of $300.
Anyway Im done with apple, and did you read my post about the itunes cards? Does anyone have anything to say about that? I don't think anyone does because they know what apple is trying to do, make money any way they can to get on top of the electronics world. -
Yeah its no different than WinMo, lots of WinMo 6.5 phones are being sold now are not going to be able to run WinMo 7. Its worse of than iPhone 4, your lucky even the 3GS can run it, probably because the 3GS will take the 3G's price point when iPhone 4 is released. The only thing apple owes you is support and important security updates. The only mobile OS that has been updated is android, even then only some phone manufactures have allowed it (2.0 to 2.1 on droid for example, and it went through months of delays). Its simply incredibly hard to coordinate and distribute a mobile OS update.
Also remember it isn't Apple making you sign a contract, its your service provider. You can always buy unlocked phones straight from the Apple store, or order them on line. Your never forced to sign a contract. Apple has no control over what contract your service provider requires for a subsidy -
As a person who has had 3 jailbroken phones (one 2G, 2 3G's), I can confidently say that multitasking via "backgrounder" on JB'd iPhones is atrocious. and it's because the phone simply doesn't have enough memory or power to do multiple 3rd party apps at once. the phone slows to a near crawl. I put up with it because there are times when I need it...but it is generally not a preferred option or arrangement by any stretch of the imagination. I've been using Backgrounder for years, so I can speak damn confidently on the subject.
the 2G and 3G simply do not have enough power and internal memory to do what you seem to feel it should do without compromising performance. Apple never trades performance for more options. that's how the keep the flowers in their walled garden so beautiful year-round, while others fight with their battery life and stability on competitors phones.
Again, we're really sorry the carriers in your neck of the woods offer 3G phones new and we're sorry you feel quasi-multitasking is such a necessity that without it, you suddenly want to and moan about a phone that NEVER had it and was never assumed to get it in the first place. If you have a 3G, you can ALWAYS jailbreak and run Backgrounder when you need it.
If your options aren't good enough for you, cancel your contract, sell the phone and get an Android-based phone. Maybe a Palm Pre. All of which offer multitasking out of the box. And never look back. OR buy a 3GS/4G when it becomes available in your area and continue enjoying the Apple environment.
and if there is a 3G but no 3GS in your market, your choices are clear as ever: buy into a phone with a 2-year contract that you KNOW won't have as many features as the phones other countries have available...
...or buy a different phone. I hear Android phones are very nice, as are Blackberries.
But the bottom line here is that it's not Apple's fault. So don't whine to or to us about it. Find the Rogers forum and bemoan them for not giving you better phones and contracts for your money. You guys are getting royally screwed. -
3G in Canada was released the same time as in the US, and the 3GS was also released at the same time as in the US, we just never got the first gen. They sell them both, but the 3G is cheaper.
-
Your claim that multitasking was bearable because others agree with you is an inherently flawed argument. People tend to try to make themselves feel better about the products they own, by convincing themselves that performance is acceptable. Multitasking on the 3g/2g via backgrounder on 3.0 was a terrible experience. It was acceptable on 2.0, but as each generation of the OS comes out, the hardware becomes even that much more outdated. It would most likely be a miserable experience on 4.0.
Your next point is more absurd than your first point. YOU BOUGHT THE PHONE OFF CONTRACT, if you thought it should have had multitasking out of the box... you SHOULD NOT HAVE BOUGHT IT. You buying it, should have meant that you weighed out the pros and cons of the device to see if it suited your needs. If you were that upset about the lack of multitasking in the first place, you should not have bought the device.
I noticed a trend with your long posts... as the posts progress you argument gets more and more ludicrous. Warranty =/= entitlement to upgraded features.
As for your other points, they have already been addressed in my original post. If this doesn't stick... maybe I will try your strategy of restating myself over and over again with a slight change in the wording. Seems to be doing wonders for you.
I will leave my post with this, if you decide to post a rebuttal just read my original post again and this one. I am pretty sure I covered everything you have/ and will say in this thread. -
It's all about marketing for not allowing 3G and older iphone / ipod touch to use full experience with 4.0.
I'm pretty sure a lot of people with older devices will want to get the latest new one and trash their old one for 4.0 features. Means $$$ to Apple. There are people dumb enough to do it or too much cash on hands.
Smart move without upgrading their hardware ... cookie cutting.. -

HE STATES THAT 2nd gen ipt & iphone 3g WILL RUN some of os4. stop whining. the 4th gen is coming in out soon so u might as well wait for that. if you cant afford it dont buy it. the other 50 million iphone users will get it. one customer lost wont hit his pockets. -
1 solution for 3g users: Jailbreak your iphone. There's no harm in it.
-
From what I've heard, 3G iPhones and 2G iPod touches CAN do official 4.0 Multitasking by changing a line in a plist.
How about it, all you people in this thread who are content to buy A BRAND NEW PHONE to get that feature. -
I wouldn't be surprised if the long-term reality is that it makes the phone unstable or less stable. background apps crashing or slowing phone or some such. if all is well with it, that's cool. maybe it'll work okay if you limit the number of apps being "multitasked". In that case, it'll mean I can sell my phone for more on eBay. win.
I want a new phone because the 3 year-old tech is showing its age. it's about half the speed of a 3GS, supports less features natively, has a subpar screen (have you seen the Droid screen? the resolution is to *die* for), and after 2 years, it's battery life isn't what it used to be (nor should it be, right?).
I have full expectation that the next iPhone will be significantly better than the 3G/2G and marginally better than the 3GS. if it gets a screen resolution bump, that will be enough reason to upgrade for me.
Now. If it doesn't get the kind of bump I'd like to see, I might hold onto my 3G until the new WinMo7 and Android phones come out in the Fall and make my decision then.
Summary to your original question: it's cool that they *think* they can get some of the mulitasking features working on 3G/2G phones, though it working on paper is meaningless. let's see the tests, the stability, and the impact on battery life on a 2G/3G phone before feeling warm and fuzzy about it. the lack of power and memory in the 2G/3G phones will most likely show its face in the real world (as opposed to a proof of concept test like changing the plist) just like Backgrounder on 2G/3G shows these phones can't do fully-functioning multitasking without sacrificing stability, smoothness, and speed. If it works, great...I'll be able to sell my phone for more. if not, well...it doesn't matter because I'll get some money for this phone and put it towards a BETTER phone, whether that's a new iPhone, a new Android-based unit, or one of the new Win7 phones.
the problem in this thread is that we have people applying desktop PC support and feature expectations to the mobile phone environment. this market has never operated in this way, where 3-year old tech can and should expect to have every new feature that new phones should have. Ask people owning 3 year old WinMo, Symbian, or Blackberry-based phones if they can run the 2010 versions of the OS on their phones. the answer will be NO.
I'm starting to think that the iPhone is a lot of you guys first smartphone and are just...unaware. continue the temper tantrums if you wish, but I'm done. this thread is stuck on perpetual stupid, and I have no interest in further wasting my time. -
That said, since the iPhone OS 4's multitasking closes most of the application while only allowing the main purpose of the app to work, (ie, closing the Pandora UI while maintaining the audio stream) it should be less resource intensive than the "true" multitasking that Jailbreaking an iPhone offers.
The only way one will be able to tell is if the way to hack the iPhone OS is true and have someone try it out. It's anyone's guess and who knows, Apple could be right in saying that multitasking on a previous generation device won't provide a great experience.
