I'm switching carriers. I'm wondering if I can use this thing as an iPod touch and just leave the sim card inside. I might get a cheap phone from a different carrier.

Once you've terminated your contract, the phone portion of the device should be deactivated. You can then use it as an iPod. If you're paranoid, you can leave it in airplane mode so all wireless communications will be turned off.

His device will still work in wifi so don't turn on airplane mode. Sim card has nothing to do with it.

I have done the same thing with my iPhone 3G. Airplane Mode should be on, while manually switiching wifi on. This way your phone is not wasting away the battery searching for a network. The sim card is needed for the device to work this way only in its setup procedure.

Depending on what kind of iPhone it is, maybe you can sell it online or on CL and get some money for it, and get a newer iPod touch??

Why when you can just keep it and use it as an iTouch? Possible fallback phone in the future ICE?

Also: Using an iPhone without a wireless service plan

It's complicated. I think I am going to move my service to vzw basically immediately. I actually need more advice. More info to come.

Like V_Chip said, just put it in Airplane Mode and manually switch WiFi on. With it set up like that you don't waste battery life constantly searching for network provisioning. Airplane mode will significantly increase the battery life of the iPhone also... by a LOT.

I use my iPhone 4 like that in my car. I just leave it plugged into the iPod sync in the center compartment... haven't touched it in a while, just plays back tunes to my head-unit.

I take it this is a AT&T contract? If so you could probably jailbreak it, then use it on T-Mobile. That's if you don't wish to pay for the internet. I had original iPhone and used T-Mobile prepaid because where I live did have mobile broadband options at the time. I didn't want to pay for something I couldn't use.

So iphone can't use free non-att wifi if it isn't jailbroken?

I have contract renewal coming up and I am wondering if smartphones like Iphone, HTC (android ones) require a data plan.

You've got to make sure you have an unlockable baseband. I've forced my baseband not to update every time I upgraded the OS and re-jailbroke, so that some day my iPhone will be unlockable if necessary.

    Also beware of "tethered jailbreaks"

it doesn't have an unlocked baseband, but I don't need it. I'm not interested in switching to tmobile.

The real question is different, I'm gonna make a new thread.
