I did a bit more research, and noticed I left out iRooster, which apparently was quite popular a year or two back...
It turns out only the top half of the list is still regularly updated (i.e. this year), and of those, as you listed, Aurora, Sleepyhead and Alarm Clock are free.
Of those 3, Sleephead is very minimalist - it is an alarm and nothing else.
Aurora and Alarm Clock both have similar features and limitations (i.e., can't close lid, will wake from power off and sleep provided you disable those passwords, etc.). Aurora launches iTunes and offers a few more settings than Alarm Clock, whereas Alarm Clock plays the playlists separately and offers a stopwatch. While not quite as fully-featured in the pure alarm clock department, it's a bit more reliable in that you're not quite so dependent on iTunes for your alarm, which, depending on certain things, may not work (the website cites examples such as keeping an "about" window open, updating itunes recently and not having clicked yes to the new license agreement, etc.).
In the end, I chose Aurora. -
The thing is, I think a lot of people have iPod Alarm Clocks, like the iHome iH6. So there is no real market for apps like these, probably one of many reasons why some of them have not been developed further.
I'll give Aurora a try, but I've become accostomed to the buzz of my Sony Dream Machine. I view an alarm clock as a practical necessity. Maybe I'm just not the type of person that likes this sort of thing. When my alarm clock goes off, I wake up and turn it off. If it played music, I'd probably go back to sleep.
PS: When will this feature be incorporated into iTunes? -
