I just received my MBP. Loaded some music in iTunes and plugged in my MP3 player (iriver Clix 2). I tunes does not see it. I changed the setting of the MP3 player from MSC (UMS) to MTP and back.It didn't help any. The MP3 player charges when attached, so I figure the USB cable is good.
What else do I need to do?
Thanks,

My MBP sees the MP3 player (in MSC UMS mode) when I look in Finder, yet iTunes still doesn't see it.

iTunes is only sync compatible with iPods/iPhones/iPads, sorry. You may be able to use an intermediate program like Double-Twist to sync it though.
edit: Double-Twist isn't compatible with iRiver devices. And looking through iRiver's own website, the Clix 2 was never supported for Macs. Considering it was released in 2007, I'd say its time for an upgrade

That's depressing!
I just spent all my play money on the MBP...can't get a MP3 player right now.
I think I found a way around it though.
I plugged my MP3 player into the MBP and it showed up on the desktop, so I dragged some music files over from the iTunes music folder to the MP3 player. I had to convert them to MP3 files first though.
I think I'm starting to see why people say iTunes isn't all that great. I figured it would fly on a Mac!
Any advice on a better work-around?
Thanks

iTunes is great. Don't be blaming iTunes or Apple because your old MP3 player isn't supported by either.
As already suggested, time to upgrade your MP3 player. -
I'm assuming you bought it before the free ipod give away? Too bad then you'd be good to go. I was going to suggest drag and drop, but I'm glad you figured it out before then. Yah itunes is a pain for anything without an apple on it.

I bought a refurb i5.
While I was thinking of getting a iPod 16GB, I wanted to get my savings back up before spending more money on toys. Plus, my current MP3 player still works fine... until today. -

I would be blaming Itunes. OSX essentially comes with software that looks to force users to have an ipod.
And why should he have to upgrade his MP3 player, I thought everything 'just works' with Apple. -
It works when the company that created the product supports Mac, which iRiver isn't for his MP3 player.
-
it is supported techinally by all OS's as it acts as an external drive, the only issue is it is desighed to work with MP3 and WMA files, and works with almost any syncing program but iTunes since Apple did not include many unsecured media devices into its sync system. ( pretty much exclusivel for i **** devices )
it will happily work with almost any other media manager -
have you checked to see if Songbird ( Songbird - Welcome) supports your MP3 player?
-
I believe it will. the old version did as a generic audio player
-
I downloaded the Songbird program, but it couldn't see my iRiver Clix2 either. Thanks for the tip though!!

Hmmm....Apple has refurb 8GB iPod Nano's for $99 now (current generation):

Does OSX force you to use TextEdit to do all your word processing as well? Your statement is absolutely ridiculous.
Generally speaking, things do "just work" with Apple when you are using components/software that are designed to specifically support OSX. Again, your statement is ridiculous because you're assuming that EVERYTHING should work with OSX, even if it isn't compatible.

try this out?
XNJB
according to its chart, it supports the clix 2
